That term literally didn't exist anywhere other than the bowels of a Trekkie forum for 20+ years, and then someone mentioned it as a comparison of Rey in the Star Wars movie. Now everyone is using it like they came up with the idea. It just kind of grinds my gears

Gotta be kidding me. I've never read fanfiction or participated in any sci-fi/fantasy forum, but I understood "Mary Sue" from my enthusiasm for cinema.

The term is almost as well-known as "jumping the shark" (nuking the fridge) or "McGuffin."

So what? Luke is the ultimate mary sue in all of cinema history.

Eh, Luke had some moments he was beaten, and badly. The way he was beaten by Vader after bolting from Yoda. The way he watched hopelessly as Kenobi voluntarily surrendered,. You knew he wasn't ready for prime time. But he was a really good pilot in the first movie. Hell, a random Wampa almost killed him but decided to eat the animal first instead of him. Yoda lifting the X-wing after he was in despair about it being stuck on Dagobah was another humbling moment for him.

Rey is a little bit too competent. She knows the Falcom very well, which makes no sense unless there is another ship on Jakku she scavenged through that was similar.

It's as if Kylo Ren is the actual "Luke" of this story, except he is going down the path of the Dark Side as despite his flash, he got beat toying around with a couple of newbies just getting their feet wet.

I had originally heard of it from UrbanDictionary many years back, but didn't hear it start to get used again till recently. It definitely applies here even though it may be a FOTM word.

I came across the term back when I was more of an anime fan. It's a fanfiction term, and fanfiction is written for just about every piece of media on can think of. It is everywhere there

I'm with Zin, never heard of "Mary Sue" either until this thread. The other well-known terms I see in reviews with term is explained or in quotes so know to search for explanation.

I like the idea that she just now learned how to do it, or at least give it a try--when she inadvertently tunneled into Kylo's mind only moments before.

On second viewing--the film satisfactorily explains away most of the common misgivings from the nitpickers.

Also--they did not have time to repair C3PO's red arm, so that last shot of him waving was very likely a goof. The scene just before that, when R2 switches on, Threepio still has the red arm.

...unless the time between showing the completed map and Rey flying off is something like 1 or more weeks? (probably needed all that time to stock the millenium falcon with Jedi snacks, knowing that Luke is probably hungry by now).

This also reminds me--Looks like Rey is essentially replacing Luke and Han, with Chewie as her first mate? Georgie's original story treatment for Star Wars featured The Luke and Han characters as one individual. Basically Han Solo and his personality, but also with latent powers. I think that was when he was first called Luke Starkiller or something like that.

I wonder if that was in Kasdan and Abrams (and the other guy--the one that originally wrote the story and draft for TFA) minds when crafting that new dynamic?
Plausible explanation.

But the movie still paused for me during the moment, meaning that I was no longer in the movie's world, but back to reality. After the scene, I was back in the fictional world, following the tale.

As I mentioned earlier, I think they deliberately made it ambiguous as to who are Rey's parents. We see her twin-like chemistry with Han, but also the flashback when touching Luke's lightsaber. Maybe they themselves still have not fully decided if she is Ben Solo's cousin or sister. That way, the fans are given a ton of fodder to theorize and speculate all the way until the next movie is released.

Plausible explanation.

But the movie still paused for me during the moment, meaning that I was no longer in the movie's world, but back to reality. After the scene, I was back in the fictional world, following the tale.

Those moments bothered me briefly at first, then a little bit more over the next couple of days, but it never took me out of enjoying the film.

I think the best explanation is that we were given ample evidence that she almost certainly received some training at a young age and was abandoned (most likely by Luke) to keep her hidden from the Knights of Ren.

Is Kylo supposed to be that much older than her, though? I suppose it is a decent age--let's say she is supposed to be 18/19, then he would need to be ~30 to make for a plausible enough gap in time for her to be abandoned/memory wiped at age 8 or 10. That's about how young she looked in the flashback; maybe younger?

But if she was hidden from Kylo and the Sith, would he not have any memory of her? Or did Luke train her away from the others and against their knowledge?

I was thinking that it's possible that she is Kylo's twin (no longer canon, but Han and Leia did have twins in those after-stories; still, this series is borrowing from previous canon.), but I think they are supposed to have a serious age gap. Or she was born later, and hidden away after Kylo went off for training. Anyway, that is all very implausible to me because I would think that neither Han nor Leia would have kept that from her in this episode.

Obi-wan's kid? maybe; but that requires a ton of back story and information that, if introduced or explained in the next two episodes, requires a lot of invention considering what is canon, no?

It's not a matter of enjoyment. It's just that I stopped being "in" the movie for that brief moment, but got back in the flow as soon as Kylo went in and had that temper tantrum.

Kylo is definitely around 30 and Rey is 19. Pablo Hidalgo tweeted it. http://www.jedinews.co.uk/news/news.aspx?newsID=24935
Perhaps Kylo saw her once or more when he wasn't turned yet.

Rey is a little bit too competent. She knows the Falcom very well, which makes no sense unless there is another ship on Jakku she scavenged through that was similar.

According to the link provided earlier in this thread; Rey had access to a computer scavenged off a Y wing fighter and had used it extensively to tap into and study languages, ship schematics, and also (I assume) flight sims. She basically has nothing to do in life except scavenge stuff, practice hand to hand combat/exercise, and sit on that computer. Perhaps that was what her wearing the flight helmet with the HUD while she was sitting on the sand dune was supposed to signify?

Also remember the Falcon is just a souped up Corellian freighter so she could have access to the schematics of a Corellian freighter on the computer. And, the Falcon was owned by the junk guy who was supposedly tasked with watching over her. So, she could have had access to crawl around the ship and explore - maybe that's how she knew it was at least flight-worthy.

In the movie if you listen carefully after she pilots the Falcon - Finn asks her something like "Have you ever flown a ship like that before?" and she answers "In sims yes, but...." or something to that effect.

She is a Mary Sue, plain and simple.

Luke sucked in comparison in the original trilogy since he always needed someone's help (Obi-wan, Han, Leia, Yoda, Darth Vader, etc).

She just has this inherent ability to kick ass and "Don't need no man".

Except for Finn. Oh, and Han. Is Chewy a man? If so, add him. 'Cause now they are a duo in the Falcon.

So I missed something completely, wtf is the deal with his red arm?

I guess it it just an homage to the fact that he is constantly being disassembled-reassembled and abused in some way throughout the series?

Threepio is kind-of the idiot butler: polite and naive as all hell and yet improbable witness to all of the most crucial events in the history of the galaxy, he would just as soon stumble into a trash grinder as he would a crucial history-changing event.

And of course everyone tolerates him but no one really likes him.

Here is the ngram for Mary Sue in quotes.

So it looks like it started being used in print around 1970 which would be consistent with the Star Trek explanation. Assuming that print has some proportional relationship to online, it looks like the use has skyrocketed in the past couple decades.

Listen to her dialogue with Han Solo when they are inside the Falcon. You get the impression that the character who takes the scrap parts in exchange for food had Rey around helping when he was installing addons to the Falcon... as for her piloting... well it's probably the same reason some other force users were good pilots.

The force is this universe's version of Deus Ex Machina like it or not.

I'm really not trying to grasp at straws here but, that situation you mentioned is kind of a two way street. Finn would have died if she wasn't there, and she MAY have been captured if Finn wasn't.

Yep they needed each other's help... It seems like Mary Sue (or Gary Stu) characters don't need much help from others the way people use it to criticize fictional characters they don't want to like.

I imagine that she also gleaned the potential of this power shortly before testing it, when Kylo interrogated her. She managed to sneak her way into his mind and see his thoughts: "You are afraid that you will never be as strong as Vader," and this seems to have surprised her a bit as I think her goal was simply to keep him out of her head.

See, the problem with comments like this is that you're justifying what you watched. Obviously, there's nothing wrong with speculation, but it gets to a point where you're making up stuff that should've been somewhat obvious. People keep making comments like, "This is Star Wars, not Citizen Kain!", and I'd like to use that exact same argument against them. If this isn't Citizen Kain, then the movie should actually explain things to ensure the movie makes more sense than trying to be overly mysterious and obtuse. It's about the movie equivalence of that guy that reads a thesaurus just so he can make people think he's smart by using big words. The movie is trying to look deep by keeping things mysterious, but it's just hiding its poor storytelling... or trying to keep stuff saved to sell us in a book.

On second viewing--the film satisfactorily explains away most of the common misgivings from the nitpickers.

Having also seen it twice, I highly disagree with that. Now, on the other hand, I think the companion visual novel answers a lot of questions.

I watched the movie last Saturday. When Rey Jedi mind -tricked that stormtrooper, my suspension of disbelief paused right there and I am feeling the how? question in my mind.

At least you made it that far. I couldn't even make it past the opening scene before I started questioning the movie.

I think the best explanation is that we were given ample evidence that she almost certainly received some training at a young age and was abandoned (most likely by Luke) to keep her hidden from the Knights of Ren.

What ample evidence? We're given a 30 second flashback scene and that's about it. Albeit, there's no real evidence that those are Rey's memories as I get the feeling that Rey was never in some abandoned Cloud City.

Yes, Rey is 19 and Ben Solo is about 30.

as for her piloting... well it's probably the same reason some other force users were good pilots.

It was stated in the visual novel that she has a Y-wing computer on which she ran flight simulations.

But Luke had visions of places he had never been yet... in episode 5 he sees his friends being tortured by the Empire in the cloud city of Bespin. Maybe Rey had a vision of places the lightsaber she touched had been.

The little girl on the planet Jakku does look a lot like Rey.

As for the visions of Luke and Kylo Ren they may not have been her memories but visions of things past in relation to people who owned or are looking for the lightsaber.

It was stated in the visual novel that she has a Y-wing computer on which she ran flight simulations.

I wished they had shown this in the movie; I doubt it would've added more than a minute to the runtime. Simulation training and powerful in the force would explain her performance in what was apparently her first aerial battle as a pilot.

This slight deviation from the overall title is not really enough to denounce the fact that she really is a "Mary Sue". Who knows, if Finn wasn't there she may have gone apeshit and excaped on her own.

And personally I don't mind Rey one bit, I think she is pretty attractive, weak in character, and seriously hinting too strongly at "I ain't need no man!". I'm interested in seeing where she goes but at this moment I can't say I don't like/want to like her. Her story just sucks so far.

Finn, now that's a character I don't like. Stormtrooper Garbage Man to the rescue!!!!!
