Indeed. I also don't get the nomination for score...It's a 40 year-old score. Maybe 3% is "new," which is still basically old motifs.
If Mad Max hadn't been around this year, I think Star Wars would easily get the nod. The FX were impressive.
Frankly, I'm also amazed that they did a digital version of the helmet when Ren was talking to Snoke. Like, really? Why not, you know, just wear the damn helmet? lol
But watching that FX video demonstrates how well they handled things, and how beautifully they integrated real FX with digital.
But Mad Max... damn. But it gets difficult when you consider that Mad Max had far more physical, real effects, with digital just to help a little and get rid of tethers and whatnot. But Visual Effects awards are all encompassing and aren't predominantly about how awesome the digital FX is but how the whole thing comes together to make it seem as real as possible.
Both are very good for VFX but, I too think that Mad Max gets the award.
