There was a new short TV spot that I swear spoils a very important scene that was not in the full trailers.
You have been warned.

I'm not buying the buzz from the premiere from the people saying it's the best star wars EVER. The buzz from Force Awakens was pretty overwhelmingly positive too. It has an over 90% approval on rotten tomatoes. But I was very disappointed with it.

That MIGHT have been due to your overreaching expectations.

Of course, your expectations may have been high due to the largest marketing circus ever made in cinema history. So, theres that.

No. People give the prequels a lot of flack. But I think the story, with Episode 3 especially, positively towers over 7. 3 was a story of corruption from within. About a free people becoming complicit in the destruction of their own democracy to thunderous applause. It was a brilliant story with weak execution. Which, in my opinion, trumps a weak story with brilliant execution every time. That's pretty much how I feel about 7. It's basically an episode 4 retread.

We've seen super weapons blown up by snub fighters on two occasions at this point and they do it again. It's becoming a point of comedy. Disney pulls all kinds of gymastics to make the good guys the "underdog" too, despite the fact that the former rebels basically are the primary power in the galaxy at this point. The First Order are the rebels. But they aren't portrayed that way. How cool would it have been had 7 been about the challenges of going from a hit and run military into a government that works? How cool would it have been for devout imperials to see the destruction of the second death star as an act of terrorism that cost the lives of many of their comrades? Now they're the rebels. Blur the line between rebel and terrorist. It could have been brilliant.

But no. Disney didn't have the balls. They dumbed down what it could have been for the sake of drawing in newer audiences that never saw a Star Wars movie in their life and the film was all the poorer for it. Rey is also way too powerful, using the Force and wielding a lightsaber with skill with basically no training. How cool would it have been for Luke to have made his entrance at the part where Kylo is reaching for a lightsaber with the Force, only for it to fly into the palm of a familiar robotic hand? The camera pans up to reveal Luke's face and the audience would have cheered with applause.

Instead of having Luke make a mind blowing entrance however, they just make Rey god like and have her beat Kylo herself. Luke is relegated to taking off his hood with a blank stare before the credits role. Just meh...

So much wasted potential.

I'm seeing this Friday on IMAX but yes, highly anticipated movies usually get positive early screening reviews, nothing new. I never take them as serious.

So much wasted potential.

The bare bones of the prequel trilogy plot had so much wasted potential. Instead, we got robotic performances from everyone (except Ewan McGregor right near the end of EP3), the dullest direction, craptacular dialogue, moronic character development and a coughing cyborg than may as well scream "shoot me in the heart for 60 points!". Christ, George Lucas had a chance to map out a character's development over pretty much their whole life and plot a convincing and meaty turn to the dark side, explore what it takes to make a real human being who has been brought up their whole life by people who value their moral code highly and also wield significant power and potential for corruption through wielding that power, and instead we got, "well from my point of view the Jedi are evil!"... er, why?

I haven't seen TFA, partly because after the prequels I would take a lot of convincing to pay to watch another SW movie, and partly because it's been described many as "A Familiar Hope".

Rogue One was the best SW I've seen since the original trilogy, but that's not saying much. It was competently executed all round and had some originality (as far as SW goes). I find "A New Hope" quite dull to watch these days. Empire is engaging, ROTJ maybe if I skip the ewok scenes and only the theatrical version.

I'd likely enthustiastically pay to see a decent script-writer and director make a series out of Kotor 1 & 2, those games at least explored the moral choices that Jedi and Sith make and the long-term consequences.

From what I've heard/seen so far, the new SW trilogy sounds like a pure cash-in, more competently executed than GL's trilogy, but that's about it. The Star Wars franchise would take a lot of work to un-fuck it. I'm not sure what creative reason there is for a sequel trilogy, the original trilogy basically tied off its loose ends. They had a chance to basically start with a clean slate, but they didn't take it. A universe of possibilities, instead we've got familiar characters because familiarity is what sells sequels.

Is anyone seeing it Thursday night?

Just got 4 tix for Thurs night @ 730 PST. The 7pm showing was sold out, but glad I checked for other times. Oh, I'm just watching in standard, because I have no IMAX within 30 miles of this freakin place. Theater is 2 blocks form work though.

95% on RT for those that care. Looks like it's at the very least not a shit fest.

And HAHAHAHAHA. I have an awesome theater near my home but a lower population. I can go whenever and get there 20 minutes early for good seats. Having said that I'll still wait a week or two to see it.

Same here .... Also I have made an effort to avoid all trailers as well since production companies seem to be hell-bent on spoiling half the dam movie in them these days.

How do you decide whether you want to watch a film at the cinema if not by seeing the trailer first?
