When did Jedis start throwing balls of energy the size of whales? Did she go super saiyin?
It happened when Lucas had no say on what Jedi and Sith can or cannot do with their powers. But as far as "lore" is concerned I guess that it would be safe to say that the "old" Jedi and Sith were potentially much more powerful than anything we see in the movies or anything that is suggested in them, old trilogy or new. Additionally, Mace Windu in I believe Attack of the Clones or Revenge of the Sith (can't remember which) said that the Jedi Council might have to inform the Senate that their powers linked to the Force have decreased, and Yoda promptly suggested to keep it silent because revealing out loud that they (Jedi) progressively become weaker would result in multiple defections from their usual supporters, in turn creating more enemy to the Jedi and powering the Sith's plans and just accelerating the whole thing (Sith vengeance).
But, anyhow, with that said, anything "Star Wars" that isn't in the movies or isn't supervised or approved by Lucas directly isn't effectively cannon and should just be considered Expanded Universe material, and in that universe Jedi and Sith can certainly throw Force energy balls the size of a whale if the story writer/lore masters of that concerned story wishes so. And, on a personal preference, I think that the Expanded Universe (most games not referring to the movies or based on them, comics, novels, etc.,) are usually significantly better than any of the six "official" movies, heck I even found the Clone Wars animated series better than the entire new Star Wars trilogy.
