I for one thought this movie was not great. Like 4 out of 10. And none of my friends like it so far either.
SPOILERS
Just a terrible, terrible story. They messed up pretty much everything in it. I liked Luke's final scene in which he projects himself across the galaxy - that was cool. Everything else was very lame, including Kylo Ren "converting" to the light but then suddenly not converting to the light. They probably realized with Snoke dead, they needed a new villain.
All of the interesting questions raised by the first movie were answered with uninteresting answers. So Rey is a nobody, Snoke is a nobody (and now dead), the Rebels are toast with only a handful of survivors, and Kylo Ren and Rey are the last two surviving force users. At the end of TLJ, I realized I don't care what happens in the next one. I am completely uninterested.
The Empire Strikes Back left us wondering - what happens to Luke now? Is Han really dead? How will Luke deal with his father and the Emperor? And, the answer to who Luke's father was turned out to be very interesting.
I walked out of TLJ with no burning questions in my mind. Apart from is it too late to ask for a refund.
I watched some theory videos on who Rey was and who Snoke was, before watching TLJ. They were all decently researched. Then I realized what happened. The team that wrote TFA did plan for there to be some interesting answers to those questions. They did drop hints as to who Rey and Snoke are. They intended for those questions to be answered later. Then Rian Johnson takes over, and is like, nah I don't care about any of that, and wipes the slate. Kills of Snoke and reveals that Rey is a nobody.
It becomes clear that this trilogy was not written as a trilogy. They didn't write all 3 parts and then break them down into movies. Instead, they are just writing 3 separate stories.
Look at episodes 4 to 6. 4 functions as an introduction. We meet the most important characters. Luke finds out he is a Jedi, and begins his journey. His meets his first mentor - Obi Wan - who teaches him a little, and later dies. In Episode 5, the story continues, and the mystery deepens. Some important questions are answered, and other important questions are raised. Finally, in episode 6, we come to a conclusion. Luke and Leia realize they are siblings. Luke reconciles with his father, right before his father's death. Vader sacrifices himself to save his son's life, killing his master and finally turning back to the light, just before dying. The Empire is defeated (or so we thought), and the Emperor finally dead.
Now compare that to this mess of a trilogy. What can happen at the end of Episode 9 to conclude this trilogy satisfactorily? Kylo Ren is going to die, Rey is going to live. Blah blah blah I don't even care anymore.
