Yeah the original star trek was good, but I can't stand this new stuff.... I'm not a trekkie so I'm all star wars... The battle of hoth... the pod races.... not to mention the light saber fights. STAR WARS!!!!!!!

1. Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space 9, were pretty all-right. In fact, the last season of DS9 was terrific. But I hate how they make pseudo-scientific leaps of logic each episode at the crisis moment. Never liked the original series at all, cept for the tribbles. Got to love the tribbles. Oh, and the ST II: Wrath of Khan movie was incredible stuff. I recommend it to even non-scifi fans.

2. Star Wars is very derivative, but the first three movies to come out were still great. Episode One was a hour-long toy commercial. I fell in love with the TIE Fighter and X-Wing games, though. Wow.

3. Their monetarily poor but vastly superior rival, Babylon 5, owns both their asses (IMHO, of course ). Skip the boring pilot and tune in about halfway into season one and you'll be sucked right in.

Back to the question: Of Star Trek and Star Wars, Star Wars is more adept at pulling at my heartstrings. Don't know about "better".

Okay, I have a lot of time on my hands tonight. I absolutely refuse to do anything worthwhile until I move onto cable later this month!

I like 'em both. The Trek empire is much bigger due to the TV shows so overall the trophy goes to ST. But comparing just the movies, I'd give the edge to Star Wars. The first three movies uttery destroyed me when I first saw them (yep, was younger). Didn't mind Phantom Menace but I understand why most everyone my age hated it. Without Darth Maul and the lightsabre fights, though, it would only have been medicore.

Star Trek and Star Wars are both great - Babylon 5 was awesome too but I couldn't watch much of it due to poor reception where I lived

Star Wars is for 10yo kids, a cartoon based on old matinee series and WW2 movies.

Star Trek is for adults.

Plotwise and special-effect wise, Babylon 5 owns them, particularly after Sheridan took command. Season 4 of B5 is the stuff of legends.

Bab 5 was OK but they had far too many filler plots. You know those corny episodes where everyone's sex drive is increased and they're forced to do...group work. Or maybe the space station needs painting but the damn Narn hid the paint and nobody can find it. Filler plots blew but the meatier stories were excellent.

I like 'em both. All the Star Wars movies are awesome! They combine to tell one whole story whereas Star Trek just takes you on a trip through the universe and tells a different story each time. I also noticed that the guys in Star Trek get "lucky" more so than anybody ever did in Star Wars (what's up with Kirk/Riker and all those weird alien women??). And just what exactly did Han and Chewie do when they were alone together all those years??? Hope I never find out....

They're on such different levels - it's ridiculous.

I liked B5... it was interesting and the aliens for the most part didn't LOOK human. There it rivals Star Wars. Star Trek aliens were all human and for aliens that they've never met before, that universal translator kicks in and knows everything after the first syllable?? Gimme a break! Give me Ali3n Sp33k!
Star Trek -> Just doesn't cut it with me anymore. No massive plots. No cool ships (except for the Klingon Bird of Prey... which hasn't changed in 200 years)
Star Wars -> Meh, its okay. Interesting ship designs and the massive plot is good... The Ewoks series kinda sucked but I really liked the Droids series when I was a kid
