Dayum it looks awesome. I spent loads of time with Terraria so this is not good news for my spare time.

these types of games seem appealing to me but without some kind of story or missions, i get bored really quickly. I know starbound is supposed to have missions though.

i also get tired of trying to mine for all kinds of crap and building stuff. it just gets so tedious.

I've been playing it. It's very much like Terraria, but the number of stars and planets is amazing. In my single player game I spawned above a giant robot city. Since then I haven't seen an NPC in any of the MP games I've played.

It doesn't have the absurdity of Terraria, which is nice. I thought Terraria got a little too nuts and became less fun as they added more content. They need to take this space travel thing and apply it to Minecraft...

Does the game have a goal? Why build all that stuff? Are the buildings more than boxes?

These are my questions

I am going to assume this game is similar to Terraria, so I will explain what I remember of that. In that game, you need to build rooms in your house for certain NPCs to move in. Those NPCs provide you with services that you need to get further in the game.

There are goals to Terraria as well. You need to collect certain items and build structures to trigger boss fights that will in turn provide you with more materials to get further in the game (more bosses to fight).

Still, this is a sandbox type game. You do a lot of stuff simply for the sake of exploration and personal satisfaction. The game isn't going to take you by the hand and force you down a particular path.

Sandbox game. No real ending to it. No "meaning" to it other than to explore (there's actually more "game" to it than Terraria in this respect).

The crafting/minecraft-survival component is way more prevalent than in Terraria, which is disappointing.

Anyway, I'll probably pick up a 4-pack for my kids at some point. They still eat up Terraria on a daily basis.

I've been playing it and enjoying it the last couple of days. They're calling it a 'beta', but the game is far from feature complete. The crafting progression for weapons/armor feels bizarre so far. I went from level 2 copper gear straight to level 13 leather gear and even the most dangerous planets in Alpha sector are fairly trivial now.

Even though, the scale is impressive so far. There are like a hundred different planets to explore just in the Alpha sector, and I have no idea how many more sectors there are in the game. It's really overwhelming how many places you can go and explore and each planet I've been to has at least a couple of interesting features to explore and loot.

One of my friends bought a 4 pack and gave away the keys. I ended up with one and installed it. Didn't get a chance to check it out much, but I was watching a stream a few days ago and it looked awesome.

Do you have like a main home world? I cant imagine building homes on every planet i explore.

You can designate one planet as your home, and then quickly find it again in your star map. It's not a great system because if you make your home in one of the starter planets in the Alpha sector eventually you'll burn a ton of fuel heading back and forth to the higher level areas.

I'm basically treating the ship as my home with all the crafting tables and whatnot set up on board. I even have a little garden.

How much are you able to customize the ship?

The ship is like a small "world" where you can build things. It's very tiny, room enough for crafting equipment and chests. It has no weapons and you can't expand it past its current size. You fuel it with wood and/or coal.

Played it some over the past few days. As others have mentioned it needs some work. But its off to a good start and has the terraria goodness about it. Hard to complain about a beta, but my biggest griefs now have to do with the mining speed and sleep healing. Both are excruciatingly slow, even with upgraded pickaxes/beds.

I was thinking the little quests were a tutorial of sorts. I got to the distress beacon one before I ever even made a tool. I was about to give up on the game because gathering was painfully slow..... heh.

A bit off topic, but I recently built my girlfriend a desktop and we've been playing a bit of Terarria together. Is reading the Terraria wiki the go-to method for figuring the game out and actually doing some fun stuff? Is starbound any more obvious with things you're supposed to do/build?

I feel like it's tough to know what items and materials make what in Terraria. I've only logged a handful of hours and I forgot to backup my game before building my new PC, but it seems a little tough to get your head around what does what in these games.

Starbound uses a blueprint system where you can find blueprints and you also gain them (I haven't figured out when you gain them, you just seem to). You start out with several, including the basic items you'd expect. You then craft the item from your knowledge base.

There is a learning curve with Starbound just as there is with Terraria. But in general there are a couple of different ways to play both games, namely:

1. Play it like a sandbox - build what you want, how you want, for goals you set for yourself. E.g., I started a new starbound game recently and discovered that my first planet was populated with a bunch of bird people. I set a goal of eradicating the foul buzzards, conscripting all of their architecture (which included some neat temple tile sets), and then building a temple to myself to live in.

2. Play to trigger specific in game events, e.g., by following quests, talking to specific NPCs, building a home to house specific NPCs (terraria), etc. In Terraria this eventually leads to a higher difficulty mode, where new materials and crafts are opened up, allowing more advanced sandbox and/or quest like play.

Both of the above methods involve a heavy dose of crafting, which means lots of digging, exploring caves, etc. The main difference has to do with the goal of that crafting. You can spend infinite time in terraria (and likely starbound) crafting an elaborate house, an underground lair, etc., while only advancing the "story" by some minimal amount. I suspect the same will be true in starbound, but the focus will not be on building a "home" per se, but rather a homeworld. At least that is what I think (hope) it will be.

FWIW - gathering does get faster as the tools you have evolve. Diamond pickaxes mine far quicker than stone, for example. So the tedium of resource gathering gets a bit less as one gets better tools. That said, the starbound beta thus far seems to be a little light on resources. At least compared to terraria. And the mining speed in general seems far slower.

But to answer your question - it is certainly possible to independently figure everything out about Terraria. But it is far easier and less frustrating to use the wiki. At least when it comes to figuring out how to craft something. For example in starbound, it is not intuitively obvious that the anvil (which is described as being used to craft weapons) is also used to upgrade tools such as pickaxes, hoes, etc. A quick look at the wiki clarifies the use of the anvil in that respect. Of course, the wiki is full of crafting and other spoilers, so it should be avoided if one really wants to be "surprised" by any of the content. But in this type of game, I think some spoilers are fine. Particularly as a major goal of the game is not simply obtaining tools, but figuring out fun ways to use them.

I kind of wish I'd used the wiki and knew the distress signal would be a boss fight. I assumed there was a chance of hostile action from the "gear up" part, but not that it would be a full on boss fight. Luckily, I managed it, but it was still... a bit of a surprise.
