I kind of wish I'd used the wiki and knew the distress signal would be a boss fight. I assumed there was a chance of hostile action from the "gear up" part, but not that it would be a full on boss fight. Luckily, I managed it, but it was still... a bit of a surprise.

Yeah, the problem with it is that if you concentrated on building the beacon you are no where near prepared to fight the boss it summons.
Learned that lesson the hard way.
After gearing up a bit to Silver armor it was a bit easier, but still tough without a good ranged weapon.

I ended up picking up a 4 pack after learning some old gaming buddies were playing it on their own server. Two copies for my gf and I and gifted the other two to some friends. I haven't had much of a chance to play too much, but it's been fun so far.

This game is awesome as you can do anything you want in it. I've spent some hours digging through my home world and reached the core.
I recommend you guys to read the Starbound wiki about the bosses. Since there is tiers/technology levels and every tier has a boss that you need to defeat to progress to the next tier.
There is discussion about adding abilities to designate colonies and adding NPCs to run those colonies. Eventually, you can have several colonies on different planets/moons.
