Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is fed up with Washington.

And he is doing something about it.

Spurred by what he describes as a failure of leadership on the part of lawmakers, Schultz is mounting a one-man bull rush against a political culture that has "chosen to put partisan and ideological purity over the well being of the people."

What does that mean? No more political donations -- not for anybody.

And he's recruiting other CEOs to join him.

"I am asking that all of us forgo political contributions until the Congress and the President return to Washington and deliver a fiscally, disciplined long term debt and deficit plan to the American people," Schultz wrote in a letter that was passed on to members of the NYSE and Nasdaq.

The goal is to hit lawmakers right where it hurts: the pocketbook.

"All it seems people are interested in is re-election," Schultz told CNNMoney on Tuesday. "And that re-election -- the lifeblood of it is fundraising."

Schultz said his breaking point was the contentious debate over raising the debt ceiling -- and the failure to reach a long-term solution to lower deficits.
0:00 / 5:18 Schultz to CEOs: No more campaign money!

"[Lawmakers] have stirred up fears about our economic prospects without doing anything to truly address those fears," Schultz wrote to his fellow CEOs.

Schultz's own political donations, as chronicled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, lean Democratic.

He said politicians can still make it right by coming together and reaching a compromise deal that would lift the cloud of uncertainty that has hamstrung the economy.

"It means reaching a deal on debt, revenue, and spending long before the deadline arrives this fall," the letter said. "It means considering all options, from entitlement programs to taxes."

His letters, and an interview with the New York Times on the subject, are already having an impact.

The Starbucks CEO said that in the 30 hours since the letters went out, he has heard back from thousands of Americans -- both CEOs and everyday citizens. Not one lawmaker has contacted him so far.

"I suspect in the coming days, people who will be signing the pledge with me will be both Republican and Democrat CEOs who have had enough," he told CNNMoney.

The amount of money spent to influence elections has been steadily climbing.

During the 2008 election cycle, more than $5.2 billion was spent by candidates, political parties and interest groups, according to data compiled by the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics

In 2010 -- a year that did not include a presidential election -- $3.6 billion was spent. Of course, 2012 has the potential to break all records.

It's unclear exactly how much of an impact -- if any -- Schultz's pledge might have. But a relatively small number of Americans do wield an outsized influence when it comes to political donations.

Only 0.04% of Americans give in excess of $200 to candidates, parties or political action committees -- and those donations account for 64.8% of all contributions.

There's two sides to this story as I see it.

1) It's good that a CEO is stepping up in an effort to get things going towards a workable resolution. He says that all options, even taxes, need to be considered for a solution. Of course he doesn't really say what types of taxes, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now and assume he at least means increasing taxes on all segments of the population.

2) If this is successful in even a small way, it only goes to show that political donations from big corporations are the main motivators of politicians. The voices of everyday citizens like you and I are largely squashed by sums of money we do not wield.

Republicans aren't getting fed up, a frozen dysfunctional government is exactly what they want.

Good. Corps shouldn't be allowed unlimited donations anyway.

Neither should unions!

The issue is not about donations amounts; it is that Washington has defaulted on its responsible to the people.

Until they do their job PROPERLY, no extra allowance for them.

Oh I get it, Republicans didn't win big enough, so he's playing the lame "everybody is to blame" card to get them to win even bigger somehow while making it seem like he's non-partisan.

Here's a hint... when someone says "both parties are equally bad", they're either just ignorant of politics or trying to scam you.

And the board members of each corporation, who's CEO refuses to "boycott" campaign contributions will remove said CEO. Siting, the CEO did not have the proper leadership and skills to guide the company through a politically rough waters.

He's still an idiot by calling for compromise but pulling support from the only ones willing to do it.

Automatically assuming a CEO is Republican and then making yourself look like an idiot by making partisan hack comments is priceless no matter how you slice it...

Hell, I give him a thumbs up, this action and declaration itself warrant our adoration.

Agreed.

Should a single person outweigh the many? Of course not. In a Democracy the majority rules. What do you imagine that looks like? This is it! We throw this man money, and with our combined support / money / voice, he can use that to turn the tide.

It's simple organization. There's nothing wrong with that, and why should there be?

What would have been better is if he had Starbucks stop withholding payroll taxes.

Good wish more would do the same but ultimately it just shifts more power to those that do continue to contribute and lobby.

that's what i was hoping to see! but at least this guy has a voice and a name to put behind it. some will listen. even if they don't stop their contributions, at least it's becoming clear that the populace, even the democratic CEO's are aware that lawmakers aren't in it for the country, theyre in it for themselves.

I don't give a single fuck how he "leans". He's a rich CEO whose interests directly oppose main street's and he's looking out for his interests, regardless of his supposed leanings driven by the need to promote Starbucks's hip image.

Neither should unions!

Everyone should have a hard cap. It shouldn't be possible for a single group or single person to finance (bribe) an entire campaign. That's just begging for corruption.

None of these are crimes. Freedom of religion lets you worship satan, hugging trees is not yet illegal, loving nature is still legal, and anal sex should definitely be legal.

You know, back in high school, my teachers penalized me for not showing my work. How did you arrive at the conclusion that the CEO is Republican?

Admirable from a CEO of a major corporation,. However, i STRONGLy suspect that Starbucks benefits little from government legislation, which is why he can do this. The rest of them are pimps. i.e. http://www.cnbc.com/id/44176733

The sooner the majority of people in this country realize that it's a plutocracy and that corporations own the government the sooner the people will be able to shed these leaders who are on their knees for corporations and get ones who actually represent the people.

I wonder if he'll be making any anonymous donations to any Super PACs...

Oh, I guess we'll never know.
