Good god at the knee jerk reactions, and the misinformation in this thread. Single player can be played offline, you just lose all the online features. Things like...REALID! and omg achievements! Oh noes, the game is ruined!

I cannot wait to see the record number of wow accounts hacked by all the people installing keyloggers with their cracks. It'll be an all you can eat buffet for the hackers.

I've ordered SC2 but it may well be my last Acti Blizzard game. The more I hear about Activision's, and now Blizzard's, attitude towards their consumers, the more I'd rather burn my money than give it to them.

Blizzard used to make top quality games and support them for years longer than their competition, and as a result their games were the most popular and most purchased.

Now, I still believe they make top quality games, and still support them. But Activision has injected a new angle, a new focus on revenue streams and anti piracy that just wasnt there before. The No Lan play is a classic example of this. It makes no sense whatsoever, from a gaming point of view, but makes perfect sense from a DRM point of view. That is, if DRM actually worked, which we all know it doesnt. If they can run cracked WoW servers, then they can run cracked SC2 servers or circumvent the check altogether. Mark my words, it will be done. So in the end, who is hurt? Joe Q Customer, thats who.

That and the nearly 50% higher price than most other new PC games indicates they know how much this cash cow is worth and are willing to milk it. Good business sense yes, kind to the consumer, no. Sustainable? I dont think so. If every Blizzard game is released at this price, but others are cheaper, it wont be long before the popularity of Blizzard games drop. Consumers wont be willing to swallow such a bitter pill combined with nickel and diming and DRM for too long.

What is with people and the anti-capitalist comments on businesses profiting? DRM is one thing and is completely worthless, but faulting a company that makes a superior product charging a higher premium? Don't blame the company that makes the superior product, blame the other companies that make the inferior product! If the other companies would produce better, then there would be more competition and the prices would be lower.

Related to having to be online to play single player: Isnt Steam basically like that?? I know there is an offline mode, but I have tried to set it up and it is very clumsy and you can get your save games mixed up or not be able to load your save that is in the steam cloud. Even worse, if someone else is logged in to your account playing a different game on a different computer, you cannot even log into steam witout bumping them off.

Maybe this should be a separate thread, but I am wondering why people criticize individual games so much for having an internet requirement to play, but nobody seems to criticize Steam.

For what I know, you can play SC2 offline, just need to validate it online first.

I dont understand this comment. Are you talking about the price for SC2?? I saw it being released for 60 dollars at Best Buy. Many other PC games are now being released at this price also. I can immediately recall Modern Warfare 2 and Splinter Cell conviction. Prices for PC games were stagnant at 50.00 for a long time, so I dont really see the problem with a price increase of 10.00. And even an increase from 50.00 to 60.00 is not a 50 percent increase.
If you want to complain about price, MW2 is the prime example. A higher price for an inferior product gimped for the PC. Hopefully SC2 will be better than this.

Personally, I couldn't care less if you need to be online to play single player considering probably in excess of 99% of players will be online anyway.

$60 is also reasonable considering the quality of the game and the huge success of Brood War. People play StarCraft professionally in South Korea, and $60 really isn't very much in the scheme of consumerism.

So, for the people that despise DRM, what do you think a company is supposed to do? and I don't want to hear that they should not do anything and still will make money..fact is piracy is bad and only getting worse...

In South Africa, SC2 is upwards of R500, while most new PC games retail for less than R400. So yeah, maybe not exactly 50%, but higher than the 20% you guys pay.

Yeah, I'm perfectly aware that they are a business, and need to put shareholders concerns such as profit margins first, and to do that they need to exploit the competitive edge they have with such hits as SC2. That doesnt mean that I like paying extra or like to be reminded of that fact.

Besides which, this seems to have less to do with how good SC2 is and more to do with ActiBlizzard's new business practices. All AB games now sell at this price point, regardless of whether they have the hype to back it up. Its all exploit, exploit, exploit. Maybe Activision will dissuade Blizzard from supporting SC2 after 1 year to save money? Divert resources into the expansions and require them for multiplayer. Makes good business sense.

Of course, what makes good sense for a business isnt always good for the consumer. See also: DRM.

1. DRM doesnt stop piracy. Can you name a PC game that is impossible to pirate? Even WoW can be pirated.
2. DRM harms legitimate consumers. Remember the new splinter cell and C&C that you couldnt play offline? And how the servers bombed, and as a result, so did single player for thousands/millions of honest customers. All the while, the pirates played on, laughing.

So, DRM is ineffectual versus pirates but super effective against honest consumers like you and me. What do I expect games companies to do? I expect them to realize this fact, save a bit of development money, get awesomely positive PR for dropping it, and save consumers hassle by not implementing it.

The CEO of Stardock said it best when he said that pirates dont dictate what happens in a game, honest customers do.

When companies take a metaphorical shit on consumers it really doesn't take a genius to figure out why they make such comments. Simply saying hey it's capitalism baby isn't going to soothe people either. Granted, I'm not sitting here whining about it being 60 dollars, but I'm not baffled by people that are either.

It's $60 in Canada, which is about normal if i recall, Strange why it would cost $10 more in SA

In germany i preordered it for 39€ today, which is relatively cheap compared to other new released games which cost ~45-50€

Sure the "recommended" price from Activision was 60€ in Germany but no one pays that much...

So, the people running these multi million dollar companies are stupid? I've heard the two arguments you stated before and they do not hold water...true pirates will always steal and and all games can be pirated...its the hoops that your average joe has to go thru to get a pirated version that makes the difference..and wow prvate servers is not what i would call pirated...

Does it suck? hell yes..but your plan is to just leave your house doors unlocked and hope no one will rob you.

DRM is a fight against the second hand market. The difference between the most expensive DRMs and the cheapest cd check is absolutely nothing to the common consumer. They just copy paste an exe. You think people running multi million dollar companies are any smarter than anyone else? Their just politicians (in the sense of skills they use) with business degrees who made the right connections at the right times in most cases.

Quite simply they understand the business aspect of game companies but not the technological side. They dont know how easy it is to pirate games, and they dont understand that this is information is such common knowledge that ANYONE can do it. Anyone capable of using windows can pirate a game.

If the average joe has to now go through the extra step of downloading a new exe, this wont stop them. It hasnt, it doesnt, and it never will.

WoW private servers - do you really think they authenticate their WoW accounts to make sure they are up to date in their payments before playing on a private server? Really?

No, my plan is to use reasonable padlocks, to deter the curious. But I'm not going to put up 30ft high walls with guard towers facing in and scrutinizing the inhabitants and then claim "its for your own good".

You know, I was tempted to take Wednesday off, chill out, and play SC2.

But now I just can't be bothered to spend $60 on it. Screw it.

You do realize that people talking about price points, ability to use the product once bought, and deciding whether or not to buy are very much capitalistic discussions.

No he doesn't. Wow private servers is not the same as "pirating wow" because you aren't playing wow at all. The whole game is server-side, playing on some cheesy private server hacked together just enough to run is not the same as "playing wow".

every big DRM game has been hacked to pieces and you can play them all atleast SP while pirated.

DRM *only* harms the honest consumer because it makes games much more difficult and invasive to install. requiring internet connections to play a SP game is so stupid its beyond requiring explanation.

How many people go "this game has HUGE DRM, I am so going to buy it because of that!!!"

None.

How many people avoid games with lots of DRM, LOTS.

I have never played anything but the demo for bioshock due to the insane DRM issues, and I passed on Bio Shock 2 for the same reason.

I'm on the fence over SC2, but I'll be on vacation out of town for the first week its out so I can sit back and see what they did to the game for offline mode then make a decision

How much money does a company lose by having DRM that is at least complicated to replicate online play? I would say not a lot. If you have to jump through a ton of loops to play online mode (Starcrafts bread and butter), most people won't bother with pirating it.
