I love the amount of fud in this thread. It's just a one time activation.
That's one time more than any pirate ever had to deal with, and the only purpose is to make the game harder to resell. Even stupider because I'm guessing Blizzard games are among the least resold mainstream titles. And then, of course, there is the question of missing LAN.

So....
Sign up for a new e-mail address.
Sign up for a new battle.net account.
Add Starcraft II to your shiny new, empty, Battle.net account.
Enjoy game.
.
.
.
Get bored of game.
Sell account.
You don't even need to deal with RealID.

Or am I missing something?

I didn't quite follow everything but I heard, that this first release only contains terran SP missions, the second zerg and then toss (or vice versa). Is this still true? then the game will be 3x60$ if you want all of it?

Anway, SC2 is by far the most expensive game. about 73$ here in webshops.
Gonna wait few weeks, finish soem other games first.

Where have you been - hiding in a fallout shelter?

There is the original game (Terran only for single player, all races for MP) plus two expansions, Heart of the Swarm (zerg single player, expansions for MP), and Legacy of the Void (protoss single player, expansions for MP).

No word on the pricing of the expansions, but my guess would be close to full price. Activision knows it has a golden goose.

That would require effort and thinking....it's easier to whine about it

thx for the info. As expected. maybe buy the original game and pirate the expansions, so I don't really like that (not on legal, morale level rather on virus/trojan level )

even if expansiosn are like 20$, total cost will still be very high considering you need all of them for a "real SC2". Wanted to buy it but cause I played sc1 quite a lot and still did unregularly up to now. But with this whole "we want to squezze every penny out of you" -makeup, I'm getting doubts.

One big thing you guys are forgetting is that if there is no LAN play for skirmishes, if battle.net goes down you are screwed and stuck with single-player only.

And when I say battle.net goes down, I mean goes offline forever. Don't think it is a real concern, then you have no valid real-world vision of how corporations work. They can and do drop all the time, get bought, sold, etc... And when that happens, what happens if SC2 isn't considered "profitable" enough to keep the servers online for it?

On top of that, I just realized, are they going to be charging monthly to play on battle.net servers? Or are they free-play servers?

If they charge for the online servers monthly, I will be returning at least one if not both copies I have sitting on my desk. To not allow LAN play for free for skirmishes is one of the big reasons I bought this to play with my 12yo son. I will have to look into it further.

Each installment is equal in length to the original starcraft campaign. You will be getting the same single player value out of each game. If all you care about is multiplayer then cost of ownership will only be slightly higher than the original starcraft since there will be 2 expansions instead of 1. I personally see it as I'm getting extra content, sure I have to pay for it, but I'd rather that than get just 2 releases and waiting another 10 years for more.

In other words, they'll be worth as much as broodwar.

Stupid question guys, but is SC2 cd-key permanently tied to your B.net account? What if one day you want to sell it?

With WC3 it's not like that. In other words, my friend can use his B.net account on my copy of WC3. However, B.net does check your CD key when you log on and only allows one instance of each CD key to be on B.net at a time. So, if my friend lost his copy of WC3, and I installed my copy on his computer, then we couldn't both be on B.net at the same time even with different B.net accounts.

I love the amount of fud in this thread. It's just a one time activation.

So, you're saying that I'll have to activate the game online one time, and then I can play the entire sp campaign with no internet connection whatsoever? If that's true, then that's frustrating, but not enough to keep me from buying the game. However, I don't buy games that require an internet connection for sp.

yes that's exactly what I'm saying. It is just a 1 time activation and then you can play offline as much as you want. Just if you want your achievements tracked you need to be online.

If you haven't been following SC2, it makes most of the entitled pirating pc gaming crew upset. Easiest way to get info is to actually check blizz faq etc, all you will find in forums is the above mentioned fud.

I went back and read this afore-mentioned link, in which Rob Pardo, Blizzard vice president of game design, states:

You don't technically have to (login), but you'll want to. You can play in offline mode if you want - I just don't think you're going to want to. You'll be giving up lots and lots of features, and why would you want to be giving up features?
So, those "lots and lots of features" that you'd be giving up by playing in offline mode are completely limited to achievements being tracked? Something just doesn't add up here.

I couldn't find any official Blizzard FAQs on what's being given up by using offline mode, so if anyone has a link that specifically explains what Rob Pardo referred to as "lots and lots of features," I'd appreciate a link.

Crack for the official retail game?
Thats awesome. Less than 12 hours. I wonder if its a record.

Plenty of games broken well before they're released especially since most companies use generic copy protection code so it's just a matter of making little adaptations.

Crack is already out this morning, just use it

Are you sure it works?

http://www.pcworld.com/article/201967/whats_missing_from_starcraft_ii_launch.html?tk=rss_news
And yet all I've seen, poking around various torrent sites, are a few people claiming--after bending backwards to apply purported "cracks"--that they managed to play a mission or two before the game stopped working, or that Blizzard's StarCraft II updater "patched" the game and nullified the workaround.
