Stargate Universe. Any good?

I stopped watching Stargate SG1 after about 7 seasons, and Atlantis after the first season. Mostly due to time constraints rather than any complaints about the quality.

How is this new series? It's not too cheesy?

Not that it matters, Universe is Stargate in name only.

I guess i'm in the minority who actually likes it. The characters are actually pretty interesting. Not that you can call anything "accurate" in a sci-fi show but all the characters appear as they would in real-life. I.E. Military guys follow orders, civilians are disorganized and whiny etc. etc. Also, they have much more fleshed out back stories than the characters in the previous series.

This is opposed to characters like O'Neill and that dude from SG-1 who, although entertaining, make you wonder how they made it in the military and how they manage to warrant any sort of credibility.

Eh, there's been a bunch of crappy episodes so far, but there have been a few quite good ones too. Also, Lt. McChesty is pretty sweet.

Also i'm curious what "TRUE" Stargate is according to your description? It's seriously just about Stargates and finding new worlds while battling aliens. Universe is like that but with more character development.

It's getting better. The most recent episode was actually pretty good, similar to old-school Stargate. Actually put the stones to a valid and interesting use.

Lol what new worlds and aliens have we discovered in Universe? In the first season, 1 new species of consequence that's lasted what? 3 episodes? And a few minor unintelligent species that are gone with the next episode. Compare that to the variety of races encountered in SG-1 and Atlantis that had continual roles throughout each series.

What I meant was that Universe is nothing like the other Stargates, and because of that, whether or not I liked the previous Stargates makes no difference. Universe has the Stargate theme, that is all.

I'm actually watching it. SG1 was fun, Atlantis was shit in my opinion, and Universe is OK.

I like it. I think that most of you guys are just bashing it because you are comparing it to great shows like SG-1, which it is not, and was never meant to be. If you look at it for what it is, then it's quality becomes apparent.

For instance, I'd compare it to Deep Space 9 vs The Next Generation. DS9 gave you a lot of character building and dynamics that very seldom left the station, TNG was more lets get out there and explore. Both were very good shows, but if you watch DS9 expecting fighting and action, boy are you going to be disappointed.

I stopped watching it 3 episodes ago. It isn't horrible, but I don't really like any of the characters. I stop watching a show if I don't feel for any of the characters.

I am a big Stargate fan in general and have watched all of SG1 and Atlantis.

I am a little leary of Stargate Universe when it first started. However more and more i am liking it. The characters have a harder more realistic edge. There is issues like not being able to speak a alien language. There is a different feal for everything because it isn't just planet of the week and they are stuck out there on this ship. Overall the series has grown on me.
