I think it's a good show. Not the greatest, but I enjoy watching it on Hulu when it's released. It is a bit more character driven than the previous Stargate shows; it sort of has the Battlestar Galactica feel in regards to how different groups of people react to a shitty situation.

good show..not great. It's a good time waster when you're bored and feel like a bit of sci fi.

What I meant was that Universe is nothing like the other Stargates, and because of that, whether or not I liked the previous Stargates makes no difference. Universe has the Stargate theme, that is all.

I can quantify this. The first 2 Stargates were campy, and we watched them because they were humorous and weren't to be taken seriously. Plus they were shooting at bad guys all the time.

SGU is shot as a drama with a "realism" feel to it as if they want you to believe it could be happening. It's too serious all the time and barely any shooting. They shot a spider a couple episodes back. This is stupid and I miss the "camp". Half the time I wish the ship would blow up so I could finally have a chuckle.

I recently watched the original Battlestar Galactica again. It was all jokes and campy sci-fi and I find it more enjoyable to watch than the 2003 version where everyone was crying into their beers all depressed the whole time.

For me, that is the difference.

Stargate TNG?

Stargate -> Star Trek TNG

Atlantis -> Deep Space Nine

Universe -> Voyager

Some originality please!

Yup. I'd add that SG1 and Atlantis were primarily Adventure SciFi with good Character development. Universe isn't really a bad show by any means, but it's so focused on Character development that it could take place in a Police Precinct, Hospital Emergency Ward, Daytime Soap, or any other 1 hour TV Drama and be pretty much unchanged. That's ultimately why it shouldn't be part of the Stargate universe(snickers).

SGU had a shitty start, but it's getting better. Less bs drama and more action.

There is just no built in episodic elements to the show, if they refuse to use the stargate as they have in previous Stargates. You just have a bunch of people going thru space in a run down ship. Not a heck of lot of storylines there.

They managed an entire episode with nothing really happening apart from rehashing of old shit. And that's in the first season. Normally it takes more than one season before you have a rehash/clips episode, so they've already run out of ideas of how to be boring an emo on a spaceship with a Stargate.

Figured I'd give it a shot, on Hulu. I've got the episode "Sabotage" on.
It looks like it was shot with a $100 camcorder in the days before anyone invented Steadicam technology, by someone who'd never seen a video camera before.

I liked the beginning to the episode "pain". I did wish that they all went crazy and started to kill each other.

I find it boring. I stopped watching it but didn't bother to delete it or stop my HTPC from recording it.

We're gonna have a montage!!!
Heh. There just was a montage with some sucky music. Skipped through it.

No kidding. So much of this episode has been, "Dammit, something happen!"

They also seem to really love shooting over someone's shoulder, or using out-of-focus people or objects to frame every damn shot.

Edit: Alright, I've watched the 5 episodes on Hulu.
This show is like its own prequel, with the non-stop flashbacks. And it's got bad musical interludes. For some reason, Dawson's Creek comes to mind, even though I've never seen it.
