SGU was the series no one asked for, but we got anyhow. Which wouldn't have been quite so bad had they not canceled SGA for it. I am and will continue to be mad about that for a very long time. I was looking forward to seeing how they would finally eliminate the Wraith, especially when SG-1's arc-ending episode (Threads) was just about the finest hour and a half of TV you could ask for.

Anyhow, Battlestargate Voyager 90210: The New Class was a clear BSG clone, because BSG was still edgy and popular. But like that emo phase in your teenage years, the public grew out of it and that left behind a miserable show about miserable people, with none of the optimism or adventure of Stargate. Even "dark" DS9 wouldn't make the audience suffer like that for weeks on end. Who wants to take Prozac just to watch sci-fi?

they should have let the series die before the hamfisted recasting of Dr. Weir
Are we talking about replacing Blonde Weir with Atlantis Weir, or replacing Atlantis Weir with new-body Replicator Weir?

You know whats kills me about you nerds. You begged for a reboot begged for one. And then when you got one you didn't give it a chance.

Universe didn't follow the same action/comedy feel of SG-1. It was more BSG type drama. If they wanted to do it, they shouldn't have used the Stargate name. It turned away people that didn't like SG-1 but might have liked this and made those that liked SG-1 disappointed since this wasn't similar. That said I still watched it since it was sci-fi and it was starting to get better.

Long story short, the Ancients built themselves some human form replicators as part of a plan to wipe out the Wraith. It didn't work and the Ancients terminated the replicators, except like so many Ancient technologies, they screwed that up too and the replicators were left behind for the Atlantis crew to find.

Pissed me off so much that I immediately stopped watching Atlantis when it was announced. And I really liked Atlantis, too. Still haven't seen where I left off.

They wrapped it up, so I would finish the series.

I hated that Ming Na had to play a lesbian. I have deeply seated hate for the writer who decided that.

Stargate the movie.
SG1
Atlantis
Universe

In retrospect whats dumb about the movie is they
killed off Ra. He should have been the ultimate Goa'uld. At least on par with Anubis, maybe tougher. He ended up being a pretty weak character in Stargate.

The only problem with Universe that I can remember is that it didn't progress at all. There were a couple a decent episodes, but if you hadn't seen it you didnt missing anything.

I really like Atlantis. Some of it is the theme, and some of it is the fact that we don't have many HD Sci-Fi's and watching something like Babylon 5 4:3 hurts. But I still like it.

I also like the ending. It was so satisfying to see Atlantis at full power.

You know, the guys who made the movie kinda dissed the TV show in the DVD's commentary track. So you could say they're rolling over in their graves about the TV show(s) (although they're not dead either).

My favourite was the movie, but I did like all three series as well. SG-1 was quite schlocky, but in a good way for its time. It got a lot worse in the last few seasons though, esp. due to character changes. The movies weren't great either.

I liked Atlantis, but again I was disappointed to see the character changes in the last couple of seasons.

I liked Universe too, but they started out a bit too slow, and there were too many people looking for SG1 in that show.

I prefer a TV series because there is a lot more content to it, especially over years. The folks who made the movie didn't make the series. So the series wins for providing 10 years (17 if you count Atlantis and SGU) of content to watch, even if it was lesser in quality than the movie, which it wasn't (IMHO).

For the same reasons, I want a Star Trek TV series, not the new action-focus stuff.

Don't know about any of this but am sad that the video game they were working on didn't go through. Looked pretty awesome with good graphics at the time.

Yeah I'm hoping they come back to Sci-fi again. New star trek or Star wars series or something. Right now it's all these lame survival series/end of society shows. They seem to be starting to come to and end thank goodness. We got nothing right now on TV, no Star Trek, no Star Gate, no Eureka, no Firefly. Give us at least something.
Very sad and very true. There's nothing for the heroic future right now.

I didn't know that they made any Stargate after Wyatt Earp and James Spader killed all those space flying Egyptian robots.

:hmm:

I mean, that was rather entertaining at the time...but why bother to keep going?

sarcasm right?

SG:U was terrible up to the season break. The 2nd half of the season they must have taken a look at the ratings and went back to the more traditional formula. If you're a SG fan, the 2nd half of the season is worth watching.

In SG1, they really didn't bring a character along all the time that was meant to annoy you. They occasionally had McCay show up to be annoying, but Sam, Tealc, ONiel, Jackson...weren't terribly annoying.

In SGA, McCay specialized in being....well, the one that should be thrown out the airlock. And in SGU, that continued with Rush being annoying, except they also added in Chloe who just grated on my nerves.

SGA just felt like the Voyager of Stargate (all the way down to Weir.) But I never got past season 1 - maybe it improved. I got through half of the first season of SGU...but just stopped. It felt like they were going nowhere...and the only character worth paying attention to was Ming-Na Wen's character. And not because I had any interest in the character....(how is that woman 50 years old? She really doesn't look it.)

Fixed. Seriously, SG: Universe was horrible.

I can watch SG1 over and over even after 8-10 times the last 5 years or so. Campy sci-fi at it's finest. I admit to skipping over boring episodes here and there though.

Atlantis has great parts and I like both McKay and Sheppard's characters but it is not nearly as re-watchable. Ronin is just a meat-head and drags the show down. He needed more depth of character and less muttering and growling.

Some of the best parts of SGA are characters (and occasional crossover stories) that came from SG1 and then there's Colm Meaney (Miles O'brien, Thomas Durant) as a bad guy and the Wraith are awesome and scary at first so all in all it's still fun and worth watching once if you're into that sort of thing.

Universe was a whole different animal created trying to chase the success of Battle Star Galactica. Very dark and gritty. Gone were the campy one liners and humorous situational comedy you'd find on the other two. Plus, it was rather boring in that they had to fly long distances with nothing in between. Instead of a new planet full of wacky people to explore every week it was mostly just them on the ship. I remember they found a desert once.

In short, agreeing with the quote.

Agreed - I can do the same with TNG. SG1 was incredibly fun to watch, in no small part because they didn't take themselves seriously at all times (see the two shows about a show being made about SG1, basically.)

SG1 when O'Neil was promoted wasn't as good (well, after Anubis was taken care of) but it was still quite watchable. Even the two made for TV movies were fine.

I haven't read the books, but based on what I know of them, and reading about/seeing the preview for it, I really, really hope they make a fine show out of that. Syfy needs a good hard science fiction show again, heck, we all do.

I've been enjoying the start of their 12 Monkeys too, so this might be a decent year for Syfy. NBC finally figured out how to not be absolutely braindead when it comes to handling that brand. Well, I won't go that far just yet - but it seems they might just be working on it. But 12 Monkeys is one thing, quite personal and closely focused, whereas The Expanse has the scale of an epic, and there has been a serious lack of serialized sci-fi epics. All the good sci-fi shows somehow don't pull in the viewership and get canceled after a season or two.

FYI, I did enjoy SG:U once it got into its groove. I watched it all after it was canceled, and was annoyed with the abrupt end. I still haven't finished SG:A, got to some point on Netflix and never returned. I blazed through all of SG1 during a 4 month training course. That was a great show. A fun watch.

Also, there are plans for a trilogy for a rebooted Stargate movie, with the original creator and plot arc that was nixed from what became the original Stargate movie.

Ugh. You can't be serious. That's when it totally jumped the shark. "She's acting funny! We have no reason to believe that her DNA is being replaced with alien DNA, but let me just suggest it and then we will all behave like it is confirmed! Oh! Did I mention that it also turned out to be true? Damn! We are good."
