Legos have always been on the expensive side, but they are still damn awesome.

With those two insane sets you pointed out, there are a LOT of pieces - the Death Star is over 3800; the Falcon has almost 5200. When buying Legos, I look at the pieces to price ratio. If it's more than $10 per 100 pieces, I tend to stay away. In this case, the Falcon is the better deal, even at $500.

I always thought the death star was bigger than that. Looks like it only holds, what... about a dozen people or so? Guess the emperor wasn't that smart after all!

yeah, but it's basically a jigsaw puzzle. it's only meant to make 1 thing. how much replay value is there?

how many times can you tear down/rebuild the death star till your bored with it? heck, after you build it the first time, what are the odds that you're even going to tear it down?

it's like a paint by numbers coloring book. (albeit an expensive one)

well you can keep playing death star trench run and have multiple outcomes. you can make your death star explode in different ways too. that should add some spice to it!

I don't like it when things aren't minifig scale, wouldn't pay $400 for that. . .

Generic knock-offs are terrible quality.

But what do you mean make only one thing you can do anything you want with the pieces. Would be a waste of a $400 set though.

I have tubs and tubs of Lego in my basement. I would build the sets and play with them for a bit then take them apart and put the pieces into a big tub. Then I would build other neat stuff out of them using my imagination. Lego has one of the highest replay values of any toy out there in my opinion. It's probably the only thing from my childhood I'm going to ensure my kids have access to.

You obviously dont have a clue about legos.

They are the ultimate in re-usable. Because every set, wether its star wars, Indiana jones, Castle, pirates, city, harry potter, etc, are all built with standard sized, compatible parts.

When we were kids, me and my brother would combine a dozen or so of our castle and pirate kits to make MEGA castles. We never made the same castle twice.

Looks like a minifig scale DeathStar I (assuming 160km diameter) would be about 12,000 feet (2.3 miles) in diameter? That's what you want?

Ok, some nerd can double check this

How many pieces per unit volume in the current Death Star model?

3,800 pieces in the Death Star

16cm diameter

volume of sphere = 4/3 pi r^3 = 4/3 pi 8^3 = 2144 cm^3

3800 pieces / 2144 cm^3 = 1.77 pieces / cm^3 in the Death Star Model

Ok, so how many cm^3 in the scale model?

12,000 ft = 365,760 cm

Volume of scale model = 4/3 pi 182,880^3 = 25,620,479,201,161,835 cm^3

How many pieces in the scale model?

1.77 pices / cm^3 * 25,620,479,201,161,835 cm^3 = 45,348,248,186,056,488 pieces in the scale model.
(45 quadrillion <-- using US naming convention)

How much would that cost?

Original toy = $400 / 3800 pieces = $.105 / piece

Scale model = $.105 / piece * 45,348,248,186,056,488 pieces = $4,761,566,059,535,927 (almost $5 quadrillion)

ahh.. so death star legos arent unique shape/sizes?
and you can make other more standard things (ie: house, flowers) with just the deathstar set?

Well done . Only logical way to do this is to buy the Lego company, and make it at cost. I bet they have an incredible profit now that I think of it. Plastic bricks? lol.

It's just a bunch of lego pieces. Some of them are bound to be special shapes, but they'll still be compatible with all the other lego pieces.

Just because something is "death star level B corridor piece" doesn't mean it can't be anything else you can imagine.

Even if their cost is .01% (1/1000th) of retail, that's still $4,761,566,059,535 ($4 trillion)

It might have unique pieces, but they'll still connect to regular Lego pieces with no issues. It's up to you to figure out how they'll work in a creation, though.

Hey, we can afford $4 trillion. If everyone on AT pooled their money together we could do it with ease. I wonder how long it would take to put together....by yourself.

The instruction manual would be multiple bibles.

It would be a lot longer than that I'd imagine, unless it was modular (as in build 2,000 of this 100 page section).

Unfortunately, I also think that the physical properties of the legos would not allow for it to be built on earth. It would crush itself under its own weight. 12,000 feet of legos isn't going to work.
The tallest structure we have made as humans is still only about 2,700 feet high. 12,000 feet and being made out of plastic would be pretty tough

Therefore, you'd have to build it in sections on earth and then use a space elevator to build it in orbit
