Nah, I think it has some uses. There are a lot of things that a netbook simply won't do. One thing is to run HD video. I can see this device working in a charging dock as a giant remote and video player. I'm sure the folks at www.savantav.com are going apeshit over this.

I can easily see reading periodicals and books here.

I can also see it used as a vehicle monitoring display (gauges and whatnot).

A wired remote? Sounds awesome!
Periodicals and books, hopefully not for research? If it's got no multitasking then switching to a document would be hard, so you have to assume the ebook program will have a note making capacity, and a very robust copy and paste so you can actually use the periodical content in whatever report you might be hoping to write.

Vehicle monitoring display is a very niche market, but it would be pretty suitable for that, I will admit.

Edit: I wonder if people will buy millions of ugly, oversized, multicolored, rubber protectors for this like they do the iphones. It does look just like an oversized iphone after all.

I just don't get what this does over an iPhone...? I have a 3GS and while I love it, it's limitations are not the size of the screen... The fact that a mini-internet connected computer can fit in my pocket AND carry 32 gigs of crap around is pretty awesome... but take away the part where it fits in my pocket and I would gladly replace it with a netbook with an actual keyboard. This is iHype, plain and simple...

Anyone else find Apple's "iWork" similar to Microsoft's "Works". I wonder if it will flop as big.

iWork, formerly AppleWorks, formerly ClarisWorks, formerly AppleWorks, has existed in various forms for over 25 years. Yeah, it'll probably flop.


If this iPad doesn't multitask (beyond built-in stuff like Mail), that's a major fail. I wasn't planning to buy one before it came out, and the announcement makes me want one less, not more. To be worthwhile it needed to be a hybrid of an iPod Touch and a laptop. An oversized iPod Touch is useless to me.

Apparently it's joy and draw is its size. Those things where an ipod is too small, and a real notebook is too big. Unfortunately for me, I gotta have that notebook part. It's really just a giant iPod Touch and a reader on steroids.

The netbook still does more, especially the ones running Windows. If this thing ran OSX I would be more impressed, but nope. People wanted size and they got netbooks. Now we get a giant iPod Touch. WTF. So I'll just keep lugging my MacBook Pro around because it's small and light enough anyway. At least you can "do" stuff on it...

I love this thing. I write a lot of reports, so I can already picture myself sitting down in front of this beautiful screen typing away on the keyboard dock while I listen to my favorite relaxing music on the iPod.
