ok, one thing it could be is that it is trying to use DHCP to get an IP address, but if it is not connected to a server running DHCP via the nick card, it will hang for a minute or 2 during startup. To check on this, and to fix this, right click on Network Neihborhood and go to properties. Find the line that says TCP/IP->"your nic card here" ,highlight and click on properties. Under the IP address the obtain an IP address automaticly is checked, that is your hangup problem. To fix it, choose specify IP address and put some bogus IP address in such as 192.168.10.10 (that one specificly would have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 )
this will not interfeer with any internet conections, but could mess up any network conections you have. You never mentioned weather or not this computer was networked.
