I'll be living in NYC starting July and I need to buy furniture for my apartment. Does anyone have any good ideas on where to get a cheap bed, matress and a small table? Just graduated so I can't afford anything lavish like memory foam at anything

I saw a really cheap one at Ikea but it's "Untreated solid wood can be treated with lacquer, wax, stain or oil for a more durable surface.". Anyone with past experience doing this stuff?

Thanks a ton,

We've treated a few Ikea tables with stains, and they turned out nicely. I'd just leave the bed as is, though, unless you're really concerned about how it looks.

If you're on a budget, Ikea is the way to go, otherwise you're going to hurt your bank account Nikster

BTW, welcome to NYC

have you managed to get an apartment already? I would worry about that first, then worry about furnishing it.

Tag Sales are the way to go. I just furnished my whole apartment from kitchen utilities to couches and tv stands for 400 bucks

yard sales for certain.
you may have to do some hunting, but you will save big bucks & possible get some really unique pieces of furniture that you cannot find in a store.

Wow how do you afford living in NYC (Manhattan I'm assuming) right out of college by yourself ?

To answer your question, check the Salvation Army for a nice used table too... we found some nice ones while in college... and dirt cheap. Ikea is also good, but I personally find them too flimsy to spend full price on (most items). Furnishing a place wasn't meant to be cheap. You have to decide whether you want the stuff to last (intention to keep forever) or if you'll get all new stuff if you ever get a house.

Thanks a ton,

If you get Ikea, make sure you get a supply of carpenter's glue.

Beat me to it. Craigslist is god for no-fee apartments and furnishings, etc you want to buy in the area.

Whatever you do, don't buy a bed or futon from Ikea. They're junk. Their other furniture is pretty junky as well, but if you do any activities on an Ikea bed or futon, prepare for it to break.

Coleman makes great inflatable camping gear, couches/chairs. A good queen size inflatable mattress works great (unless your GF/BF is fat).

i got much of my stuff from ikea actually... there are also several home depots in the outer boroughs.

if you're gonna treat the untreated wood, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE LOTS OF VENTILATION...
