Just picked up Morrowind GotY Edition on Steam and downloading now. First time playing it. Are there any updates or mods that I'll need? What's a good beginning class?

Also is it worth playing Morrowind if you've already played Oblivion? It's just an older version of the same thing, right?

It's pretty much what you said, an older version of the same thing.

Morrowind has:

- Simpler, but far less frustrating combat.
-More restrictive fast travel.
-No "go to this exact spot shown on the map with a big red arrow to instantly complete quest, you drooling monkey" function
-More original, but also a lot more boring main quests.
-No enemies that level with you, which makes it an actual rpg, unlike vanilla oblivion, which might as well be strange little first person action game.
-Not as generic/stock as oblivion.

In the end, both games blow donkeys and you should probably play something that's actually fun, but if you want to play oblivion, I would suggest to mod the crap out of it. And don't try to store your shit in random barrels or crates, etc, because, for some reason completely alien to human logic on this planet, galaxy, universe and plane of existence, the containers will reset after a while and your items will be forfeit.

For mods, I'd recommend the oblivionXP plugin, which changes the tes leveling system to a classical xp based system.

Personally, I liked Oblivion, but I did hate the levelling system.

I tried Morrowind two or three times and could never get into it. But a lot of people think it is a better game than Oblivion. I never tried any mods for either one.

Private Mobile Base.
And learn how the console codes work. They can save you lots of stress over the course of the game.

BTW Morrowind >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Oblivion

Oblivion was just a sad attempt at an Elder Scrolls game. Absolutely no sense of scale or exploration. Fast travel? WTF was that? Shoot the guy who put that in oblivion. Silt Striders go!

/RAGE

I'm going to reinstall Morrowind now.

Hey, how about instead of raging about how much you don't like oblivion, you answer the guy's question?

It's been quite a while since I've played Morrowind, but I didn't find the storyline to be quite a intriguing as Oblivion's. The feel of the world is a bit better in Morrowind, but I still like Oblivion better.

See this thread. It's a bit of a pain to set the mods up, but once you do the game runs in widescreen and looks very good, or at least as good as a game of that era is going to look.

Definitely try the Morrowind Overhaul mod listed above. With the new mods, Morrowind was still able to tax my system; granted it's several years old (OC'd E6420, 8 gb RAM, 9800 GT).

I will say though, the lack of fast travel is frustrating. Back when Morrowind was released, it looked gorgeous so I didn't mind that travel took a long time because of the environment. To get around that, use the console codes.

I found Oblivions main quest rather dull compared to Morrowind's and the guild quests were more scattered across all the cities not just a few of them.

As for mods, the only big one I endorse, besides the graphically improvements, is the gcd (gariah's character development). it gets rid of the obnoxious leveling and you can go beyond lvl 100

I liked Oblivion quite a lot but yeah, the fast travel feature did kill the sense of exploration/adventure that Morrowind enjoyably has plenty of. Oblivion ended far too quickly for me (I even finished almost all the side quests) and I blame it on the 'instant travel' feature.

From an RPG perspective, I like Morrowind a lot better. I played Oblivion a decent bit and tried tons of mods, but it always felt like an empty shell comparitively.

Make sure you do both the official and unofficial patches to fix the many bugs.

Here's an awesome mod page: http://www.mwmythicmods.com/realism.htm
http://www.mwmythicmods.com/starting.htm

I would pick some that don't change the core of the game, at least for your first time playing. Except maybe for some leveling system fixers if you think you'll like it better.

The way skills and leveling work in Morrowind is weird. I haven't played in a while but i think that, for example you don't want to pick athletics or acrobatics as major skills because you run/jump all the time and will level too fast and miss out on stats.

For fighting, i would pick one weapon skill and max it. If you don't want to use a shield, go spears. Marksmanship is a nice minor for backup. Offensively casting is hard in this game, i liked to stick with "backup" schools of magic like Mysticism (allows for mark/recall), restoration, or alteration. Security and stealth are extremely helpful, security moreso if you don't like the stealth playstyle. It's easier to find awesome light or heavy armor than it is to find awesome medium armor (barring mods ofc).

In the end, you will basically become a demigod anyway once you reach a certain level. Go exploring and have fun!

I dont understand the problem people have with fast travel. Personally, I hate spending hours just walking or riding from one place to another. And no one forced you to use fast travel. If you didnt like it, just dont use it. If you thought the world wasnt big enough or the quests were not good, that is one thing, but fast travel just seems like a convenience for someone that wants to use it and something that can be ignored if you dont like it.

Look at who you're talking to. These people can't even stop from talking about Oblivion and how terrible it supposedly is in a thread that's purely about Morrowind.

People bitch about the 'Big O' in Morrowind threads 'cause it was so disappointing, especially after the big buildup. Morrwind was interestingly exotic. O was a mishmash setting from a bad D&D campaign.

But enough argumentative rancor.

This site has a good set of instructions on how to set up a heavily modded Morrowind, with graphics upgrade installments and advice and suggestions on mods to add. I usually only add mods that seemed fitting to the enviornment of Morrowind, but that can be a bit more difficult to figure out when you haven't played it before. Still, a lot of the graphics upgrades and bug patching are very useful. You shouldn't be afraid of small mods that don't affect things too seriously, if they sound good to you.
