I went to startsampling to set up an account for my dad, WoundedWallet is right about it being more than regional. After I signed him up I looked at the samples available to him and all he had was that fruit wash and some twizzlers! He just lives 1/2 hour away so it had to be either age or college education or income, etc. So you can tell if you'll be a candidate for the sonicare even if it's temporary out, by how it shows up on the main page when you're signed in.

CarpeDeo, the testers have 2 AA batteries inside of them and will die after approx 60 uses. I bought a few of these on clearance at Target awhile back and I wanted to know how they worked. It was a pain to get apart. I literally beat it with a hammer before it came open only to find there's NO WAY to replace the batteries. The batteries are more than half covered by some sort of heavy duty glue/epoxy. They wanted to make sure you couldn't replace them.

I have the "retail" version of this toothbrush. I wouldn't mind picking up a second one free or cheap......hehehe

The reason they are sealed so well is they are almost totally waterproof. They are charged by induction. Pretty cool little system, actually.

I wonder what profile makes you most suitable (in startsampling's view) for a free sonicare toothbrush. I wouldn't mind trying to pick a free one up if I knew how to fill out the form. Like, are poor, uneducated people likely to need one of these or is it the rich, intellectual types? Dumb really, but worth a shot. If you get in, let us know how you rated yourself.

If you signed up and can't get the "click to order" link for the toothbrush, it's probably because that particular sample is under the "these are the samples available to some of our OTHER customers" heading. :frown: I'd love to get this, but I guess I don't qualify. Oh well.

The Sonicare toothbrushes are now available again in the N. E. Area and it is about 12.54AM EST...about 500 left so hurry and good luck...


As for the profile they are targeting, my "guess" is that they are presently targeting late 30's to ealy 50's, with family with kids and pets...if you have already registered, you cannot edit your age so don't even waste your time. You can try to register your significant other but under startsampling's terms, they allow one member per household.

Hope this helps for those of you who really want this item badly, perhaps you can ask the assitacne of afriend witha different address "who fits the above profile".

I also want to thank all the wonderful posts I have enjoyed the past months. Although i have not post many items, i look forward to contributing when i can. Once again, thanks to everyone who have contributed to this forum.

It's 3:12am here in the East and I just got one! Clicked the link and it took me straight to the order 1 for free page. Yesterday I couldn't order anything, it was all available to other subscribers. I got an email today asking me to update my profile with them, but I haven't done it yet.

Got one! I tried the last few days but none were left. Today I dropped into the forum, saw the thread and tried the link, 10 left. I haven't typed so fast since my gamer days. Got one though.

Problem I must have had in the past is that nothing I wanted was still available, because this was obvious "click to order" etc. and before none of those options existed.

okay, i was hoping that folks were able to read between the lines in my prior post regarding the type of profile startsampling is looking for but I guess some folks need just a little bit more info. Since I am kind of new in posting at Anandtech, i was not sure how much info I am ALLOWED to post without getting "locked". Well, here goes...

They prefer the following:
female or male between ages of approximately 38-50 years old
married
with children
with pet
college graduate (minimum)
household income (at least above $75K)
work full time
profession: executive, sales, marketing, technical, management

The think if you fit the above profile, you will qualify for the sonicare. Then, you just need to wait for it to be available in your area. Now, if you qualify, you will see that it is available to you under "samples available to you" but it will have a red dot next to it (this will allow you to know that you qualify under profile..then, just wait for it to be given out in your region which is up to you to check back frequently). Now, on the other hand, if after you register with the above profile and you still do not see it under "samples available to you" (even with the red dot), then i apologize for the misinformation above. Remember, this is just my best guess through my own and family members experiences.

Note: 9 out of 10 family members and friends have been successful with a profile similar to the above. The only thing is that they are all located in the east coast.

If anyone uses the above profile and is successful in "qualifying" just the profile part, can they perhaps post which region they live in so perhaps we can confirm that this profile works not use in my area.

OK, an update from my experience.

I never went back to change my profile, instead I tried ordering it straight from Sonicare.

What a zoo!! Their site gives errors everywhere. Even on basic stuff like sending messages.

So if you got through with SmartSampling feel lucky. Cause at the source the story gets even worse.

I'll try changing my profile later on and see what happens.
