Target Audience Strikes Back!

EA loves reddit; any critical post against DICE's design decisions will be voted down fast. Except for bugs, people love to rage about those even though they'll be fixed. Design choices don't get fixed - not often.

Anyway, DICE is back to telling players what players should think is fun; as there will be no space combat. Also 40 players, which is eerily similar to:

Would love maps of only player controlled star fighters where you launch from a capital ship, and you need to shoot down players or destroy the capital ships (no spawn game over).

Also a level(s) where everyone is in vehicles (yes, I could fight the hoth battle day after day after day.....)

Apparently there is a 5-8min gameplay demo on the convention floor. Hopefully they will release it to youtube.

Graphics look good, but I'm not that interested since there isn't a SP element. I'd really enjoy a decent Star Wars FPS campaign even with a throw away story. My days of FPS multiplayer gaming (unless its coop) are over.

Now isn't that interesting. DICE created a huge uproar in years past by adding single player to MP focus games.

I suspect it is because Disney wants major storytelling to be left to the movies and non-shooter games, though.

WHo says EA/DICE have to make a Star Wars Battlefield clone? They are doing whatever they want and not necessarily what people would want to play.

I didn't say anything about a Battlefield clone. One specific design decision doesn't make something a clone. I guess we're back to the old Battlefield discussions where if someone asks for one thing to remain the same, out of hundreds of design aspects, they are asking for a reskin.

Funny thing is, I believe you are under the impression I want them to add single player. I don't, and I didn't want single player for Battlefield either. I am simply observing that it appears Disney is the master here, because if it was up to EA/DICE there would likely be single player.

They would have needed more time (and resources) if they were to create an actual campaign. The game has to be released alongside the movie in December. Had it not been for Disney's plan to release both at the same time then perhaps we'd have seen it being released later in 2016 with a campaign.

That, or the dev team themselves simply and merely didn't want to create a campaign at all, who knows. But my gut tells me it's (lack of a campaign) just the result of a decision made to favor the business of Star Wars and its "revival" with the arrival of The Force Awakens. And I don't know, maybe Disney thinks "We paid a crap load of money to buy Star Wars, we'll do everything to make that back and much more", which includes pushing Star Wars-related games out the door when it can (not that it "should", but it can) coincide with the release of the very first Star Wars movie since the past decade... that's an opportunity (for money) that they couldn't let go (that's just how I see it).

From what I've read so far there is going to be a single player mode, but it might just be various objectives on the regular maps. I'm not too worried about it as the single player modes are a drop in the bucket compared to the time I spend on MP modes for games like this. Would have rather have a 5-6hr campaign or a couple extra multiplayer maps in the long run?

Dice isnt really good at single player campaigns, so its probably best if they dont spend too much time on it. Maybe just do what they did with BF2 and do MP maps with bots so you could try out weapons and vehicles.

I'm pretty excited. I spent hours upon hours back in the day playing Battlefront 2, not even multiplayer or campaign, just oodles of shooting up enemies in instant action. The lack of a campaign or space battles is lamentable but understandable. The former is understandable for the reasons Zenoth said, especially considering that this trailer came out right on the heels of The Force Awakens' new trailer. That can't be a coincidence. As for the latter, it may be as simple as the devs not wanting to be overambitious. I'd like to see space battles introduced in a potential sequel, though. Trailer looked awesome, gorgeous for in-engine footage. I assume the game will run on Mantle, or will it release close enough to DirectX 12 to use that?

I'm skeptical that sequels will have space, either.

While they are careful not to explicitly say that they don't think space is fun, instead saying they want to get planetary combat right, I think it's not inappropriate to read between the lines.

"Bach continued, “Space is hard, right? Not from a [development] perspective, but from a logistical perspective. Is that fun? For us it doesn’t make sense to create a battle above you if you’re fighting other players who are not there to fight. Our focus is to do planetary battles.”"

They almost make it sound like space battles MUST exist in the same map as a land battle and that this makes space not fun because you can't fight on the ground while you're in space.

Sure...in engine footage, we all know even cranked to the max the game will never look like that to consumers.

Just wanted to throw this in...

There's [understandably] quite a Star Wars fever lately (well, "lately" as in since the first teaser came out, but of course since the past day or so now with the second teaser). I love the franchise, the universe, the characters and their respective story(ies). I also really like certain games (the majority of them aren't really good, but some do stand out from the crowd).

Now here's the thing, I never played the original Battlefront (but did hear about it at the time when it was relatively new). I did, however, became hyped for Battlefront II and bought it soon after its PC release. To my surprise, I liked it... BUT... for reasons that today completely elude me I never really "got into" it that much. I remember playing it maybe the equivalent of two weeks or so, pretty much every day. I mean it had its time (for me, it was short but I enjoyed it). However, it soon faded away from my interests (still now that I'm typing this I'm trying to remember just why that was but I can't recall, it might have been something else going on in my life at the time, or simply another more interesting game came out).

A few hours ago I decided to install it (well, had to actually search for the box first, got the retail version). The decision was impulsive but I was sort of bored (the irony of what unplanned activities on Fridays can do to me) so I thought "ok what the heck, why not". The first game mode I chose was Hero Assault, on Mos Eisley. That's * THE * game mode I do remember playing the most at the time (honestly though I didn't even remember that it was the case at all, until I saw the game mode again after install it). It's the whole Jedi Vs. Sith battle mode thing.

Well guess what... I don't say this type of thing often but holy shit I had a lot of fun. Now ok, granted, the fun in question didn't last that long. My attention span on certain types of games changed over the years (not that it decreased across the board for everything I play, but it just "changed", some games I used to play for hours now only draw me in for maybe 45 mins and I'm done even though I can still enjoy them). But my amusement out of it was genuine, didn't care One. Second. about the "aging" graphics, the music was awesome, the action was cool.

I mean... I guess that the whole point of this is if any of you guys right now sort of have a craving for Star Wars gaming that seemingly comes out of nowhere (or obviously comes out of the excitement generated by the second teaser of the next movie) and you do happen to own Battlefront 2, then do give it another go, even if it just lasts half an hour, that game still has it I'd say (and I'm saying it because I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I just did).

My son has spotted this on Origin and is chomping at the bit for it already. The trailer looks pretty cool, keeping my eyes peeled for in-game footage since I missed the live stream.
