Hi everyone,

I got offered a job at Batesville, Indiana (~60K/year) and was wondering for those that currently live in that state, how is it, what can I expect from the weather, what is there to do, etc.

Also, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on moving. This will be the first time I'll be moving (leaving the nest!) and for those that have experienced it, what should I be aware of (e.g. car registration laws, paperwork, what to move, what not to move, what should I be aware of, etc.).

Basically, I feel kind of uneasy given that I've been living in the California Bay Area/Silicon Valley ever since I was a kid. Guess what makes me worried the most is that I kind of have the notion that Indiana might be one of those boonies areas... In other words, I'll be bored after living there a couple of months. One thing I'm fairly sure of though... Cost of living is much cheaper.

where are you moving to ?
here in the capital it's decent. lots of good concerts and shows to go to.

i go to school at IUPUI in the city and i like it.

if you're going to be anywhere besides indianapolis....it's pretty much redneck farmers who drive their trucks around all day. (from my little experience with them)

weather is unpredictable. sauna one day, fridge the next.

Where in Indiana are you headed? There are several larger cities other than Indy. However, much of Indiana is rather rural. If you are used to a more fast paced life, you may be dissappointed depending on where you will be moving to. There are several suburbs of Chicago in Indiana that you would probably be very happy living in.

I came here (Indiana) from Iowa a little over 2 years ago.
The climate is much milder here than Iowa, seems like the people are friendlier. Yes, if your anywhere to far out of Indy, expect rednecks and that wonderful sothern draw accent.
In fact, I called a guy today about a used car, and he sounded EXACTLY like "Cletus the slackjaw Yokel" from the Simpsons.

But, if your coming from California, it's gonna be a huge change for you. Yes, from what I've seen, this is about the cheapest place to live in the US.

I'm married and in the suburbs, so I can't really recommened where to move in town or what's cool to do

I would not want my kids to go to K-12 school there. Indiana prefers to import educated people instead of paying for good schools

Lived in central Indiana most of my life. It's rather dull. It's not a bad place really, but it's not very exciting and it's pretty homoginized<sp?>. At least compared to places like Chicago or LA.

I went to school in Indiana. If you're in a big city, it's not bad. If not, you're SOL. Fort Wayne isn't bad. Decent sized without being too big, fairly cheap to live.

That house in The Denver Metro area would run over 500K

My company has a office in Anderson IN. I have flown out there a few times and i must say Anderson has some down home country folk. the first time i went out there i got lost and was driving through a neighborhood and i went up and down the same street several times. On the street was a house with an old geezer sitting on the front porch drinking a glass bottle of coke. Each time I passed him he grinned a toothless smile and waved.

I went from CA to IN and back to CA in less than two years. I wouldn't go unless they are paying you boat loads of cash. The weather sucks big time.

Nope, Indiana sucks. Worthless government officials, unpredicatble weather, rude people, you name it.

I've lived in Indianapolis and Bedford, Indiana. Once I leave here, I will never come back.

Dang... Looks like most of the replies are quite negative.

Basically I got a job offer from Hillenbrand Industries (Medical Equip/Product company, 7th in their industry) and it looks like they'll be offering me around 60K/year with re-loc exp. They are located in Batesville, Indiana, which is about 50 miles southeast of the capital, Indianapolis.

Considering this job, as they are a Fortune 500 company, have been making profit for the past 30 consecutive years (impressive given the current economy), and have been around since 1906. The unemployment rate here where I live (Silicon Valley/Cupertino, CA) seems to keep on rising. Last time I checked it was around 8%. Being that I'm fresh out of the good ol' university and that I'm being a 20 year old, think 60K a year is an excellent wage (+4 years of professional exp).

But if living there is as bad as everyone is saying, especially the comments regarding ethnic minorities (Asian American here for those that are wondering), that makes my decision just that much harder to make.

The only reason I dislike Indiana is because of the cocky SOB's I ran into last November there while we were visiting our chapter at IU Bloomington. "Indiana should have won, wah, wah, wah." I also disliked the McDonalds by our hotel, and a few other things I can't remember right now...but none of this is based on any real experience I've had in Indiana.

I've heard people say people in indiana are rude, but I found the exact opposite. Where I was living, people were VERY friendly and helpful to an out-of-towner.

That was northern indiana, where I was told by a friend who lives in central indiana the people are rude.

It was a nice little town (Warsaw). Not much to do, but it was big enough to shop in and had a movie theator and plenty of places to eat. Ft. Wayne was only a short trip away.

I'm sure the state has gone to hell in a handbasket after Bobby Knight left.

Nice people, affordable housing and cost of living, close to a lot of things,
decent weather, good schools (at least in my town) and basketball....

and Batesville is a nice little town.
