I have lived in indiana my entire life. I live in a city called Columbus that has around 35k ppl or so. I love it in Indiana. Theres always been stuff for me to do or places to go. The weather can be freaky sometimes. Few years ago I was wearing shorts and swimming...the next day it snowed... I think you will find that the whole redneck thing is only around the smaller farming communities. I have always thought that Hoosiers are some of the nicest ppl I have known.

Funny thing you say that as it is that casket company that is hiring me for their IT dept. Basically Hillenbrand Industries... Supposedly they make medical equip and are in the insurance business as well.

I think it depends a lot on where you go in Indiana. I've heard most parts of Indianapolis are nice. Evansville to the south is very nice but unless you are specifically offered a job in that area don't move there. Finding a job can be difficult.
Stay away from Gary. It has and may still hold the title as Murder capital of the world.

As for Batesville I know nothing about it other than it's 45miles from Cincinatti, Ohio. If you don't mind a 45 minute drive to get to a big city it's probably a good job to take. If you get fired you can always look for work in Cincinatti.

I lived in the northern suburbs of Indy for 15 years. I have traveled the US extensively and currently live in Minneapolis. I can say that Indiana has many pros and a few cons:

Pros:
1) Very friendly people (in general). Sure you will run into the occasional jerk, but most Hoosiers are really friendly.
2) Indianapolis has become a great city. Plenty of museums, malls, sights, sports arenas, ect. It's cleaned up tons in the past 7 years and it now looks great!
3) Cost of living in Indiana is VERY low. The housing market is completely affordable there. You will see new houses being bulit everywhere because many can afford them!
4) Gas is some of the cheapest in the country!
5) Auto insurance is "at-fault"...which will save you about $400/year just for the state being this way.
4) Indiana is one of the greenest states you will see (in the spring/summer). Lots of trees, fields, Kentucky blue grass, ect.
5) Several top notch universities in the state (ie. Purdue U.(my alma mater), Indiana U., Butler, Notre Dame, ect.). The public education system definately has room for improvement. However, I went 3rd grade through high school in a public school and I think highly of my education.
6) You get to experience all 4 seasons of weather!! (this may be a con for some). Fall and spring are awesome!
7) Indy isn't far from other major cities in the midwest (ie. Chicago (3-4 hrs.), Cinicinatti (2 hrs.), Detroit (5-6 hrs.)).
8) During the summer, you will experience THE finest corn on the cob in the country.....YUM.
9) People are pretty passionate about sports here. Especially high school, college, and pro football/basketball. Yes...you will see a basketball hoop on every farm house and every driveway. Soccer is big. Indiana is one of the best swimming states in the country.

Cons:
1) Indiana is very Republican and very conservative...It's in the heart of the midwest.
2) Small towns galore. This may be a plus for some who like small towns everywhere. Living close to Indy is definately a good idea, as the small towns can get to ya after a while. You will find people who have lived all of their lives in the same smalltown. Tip: Listen to John Cougar-Mellencamp's "Smalltown" song for more info about Indiana smalltowns. He's an Indiana boy.
3) Summer can get really hot and humid. The worst is just sitting there and sweating because it's so humid/hot out!!
4) Indiana doesn't participate in daylight savings time like everyone else....majorly annoying!!
5) Allergies suck in this state (if you have em)!!!
6) They salt the roads in the winter = rust on cars.

Well there ya go. That's a BIG list! Hope it helps. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. And sorry...I've never been to Batesville before so I can't comment on it.

Batesville is more than 50 miles from Indy. It's closer to Cincinnati than it is to Indy. You could probably live somewhere like Lawrenceburg, IN or even Western Hills (in the western suburbs of Cincy) and just commute if you'd like to be nearer a metropolitan area.

Both sides of my family are from Indianapolis, so whereas I have moved all over the country, I consider Indy my home. We lived in Indy for a while, and Vincennes from '86-'89. I love Indiana. My dad graduated from IU. We are huge Hoosier fans. I watched the Hoosiers win their Championship in 1987. Loved that they made the Championship game last year, and am disappointingly expecting a first round loss to Alabama (10th seed who was #1 earlier in the season). When I visit Indiana, I feel right at home. The people are so friendly. The whole state has that Norman Rockwell small town atmosphere. It is a conservative state, like Fonz said, but I consider that a pro, not a con.

I live in AZ now, and even though I'd love to move back to Indiana, I just don't feel the job market is very strong there. My friends and family back there are always looking for jobs, and the jobs they do get don't compare to the salaries elsewhere. Sure, it keeps the cost of living down, but I need more financial security.

I've lived in Anderson all my life and most of whats been said is, for the most part, true. Lots of small town redneck communities here. People are friendly and laid back. Indianapolis has improved a lot in the last few years as far as things to do.

Atleast in my area the economy pretty much sucks though. Anderson has lost all of its Industry (Delco Remy , Delphi , etc). I don't see much improving in that area either.

About the only think I know about Batesville is the Sherman House. Stop there and eat breakfast anytime I head down to Tennessee.

Cost of living is cheap here , but thats cause we all have crap jobs and make little money. If you don't like the weather, hang on it wil change in a few minutes. lol

It will be a big change coming form Cali for you.

Over all I like the area here and the people. I do plan to move though after my kids are grown.

That would be $400K in AZ. We're looking to spend between $150K and $180K, and we're finding that new houses are about $100/sq.ft. So $150K buys you 1500sq.ft. I say new, because older houses have appreciated and cost more! (An "old" house in AZ was built in 1989)

Don't come to work here in Indiana! Stay in California and go to work for I-Flow.
Get the company rolling so the stock price will rise and I can dump my shares.

Evan Bahy (<-sp?) will be your congressman. If you can handle this and stay away from Gary, then it is pretty nice.

There are also a lot of Germans in Indiana. I don't like bratwurst and sourkraut, so it's hard to find something to eat at the local delis (I'm serious). There's lots of Oktoberfest and stuff like that. There are also quite a few Amish people, at least in southern Indiana.

Also, I'm mostly Irish but part French-Acadian so I can't decide if I want to go door to door and surrender to people or hit them with bar stools....
