*The Republican Party
I haven't seen any posts from the left here which indicate a willingness to compromise, but I am willing, eager actually to cure my misapprehension, so feel free to post some links to discussions here. I'd prefer to read something more uplifting than continual insult trading.

Thirty days until Trump delivers his first State of the Union speech in front of Congress.

Thoughts? Predictions? Good ideas for a drinking game? Of course, a lot can happen between now and then... Who knows what revelations in the Russia investigation are forthcoming, or what Kim Jong Un might do.

One things for sure... This won't be a typical SOTU speech, and I expect TV ratings will be through the roof (just like Donnie likes it.)

My predictions:
- Trump will go off script/off teleprompter at least once to deliver a rambling rant about something
- Paul Ryan fails to keep a straight face.
- At least one Democratic member of Congress refuses to attend... And at least one other will break decorum during the speech (I.e. "You lie!!!")
- All Democrats remain seated at all times with zero applause.
- Trump will lie about something stupid in order to inflate his ego.
- Trump will launch a petty attack on Obama and/or Hillary Clinton.
useless tradition, I must said Jefferson was concerned that the practice of appearing before the representatives of the people was too similar to a King addressing each Parliament with a list of mandates, rather than "recommendations."

One need only think back to the highest profile case of compromise: Obamacare.

Here meaning the Anandtech forum, sorry if I wasn't clear enough. We should all be tired of finger pointing, it's just the slippery slope to the now infamous "whataboutism." I don't want to look at them over there, I want to look at us over here.

as CIC I'd follow his orders, but as a fellow soldier, he'd be the guy that everyone knew would get them killed in order to save his own skin. These rare types of "very dangerous to be around shitheads" we all avoided like the plague. You just knew it deep down inside the moment they came into view. You fellow veterans know exactly what I mean.
Just a great, great post. It's here.

Broken, damaged, etc. But I certainly would not vote for a child molester just because the only other option was a conservative.
I find it remarkable that even though all my comments have been directed towards AT P&N as a group, none of the replies have been. They're about justifying one's own behavior based on that of strangers.

Maybe I should stop before I get ran over. I am fond of this forum, I mean not this subforum really, but anyway. Why do I come in here? I'm a recovering ideologue, and I know better. But just like when the wife makes cookies, my resolve not to eat them dissolves after walking past them enough times.

Sorry, but "both siders" just enable the GOP to get worse and worse and never be held accountable.

That's the standard reply of ideologues, and I know it well. It's just a variation of "my way or the highway," or perhaps more kindly, a way of coercing wandering members of one's peer group to see things the right way, you know, the only true way, our way. It's been used in reverse on me in other forums where I wasn't conservative enough. It's meaningless to me. I have no party to identify with, nor one to oppose. I'm not going to be accepted into the peer group.

Posted as a reply in another thread but deserves mention here as well:

CNN who polled similar to CBS people before the speech and after found less flattering results where:

Trump gets least positive reaction in at least 20 years

https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/31/politics/state-of-the-union-reaction-poll/index.html

Almost half of Americans who watched President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address -- 48% -- say they had a "very positive" impression of the speech, down from 57% of speech-watchers after his first address to match Barack Obama's rating after his first State of the Union address, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

It's the lowest net positive rating for a State of the Union address since at least 1998, when CNN first asked the question. There is no equivalent poll for addresses before 1998.

"in god we trust," in 2018... your motto. lulz

It's like when Bush said (roughly), "i saw his crucifix and looked into his eyes and knew i could trust him." Was he ever photographed wearing his grandmother's crucifix before or after Bush's visit? He wore it especially, reckoning that should be enough for Americans, because their motto is to trust in nonsense.

Otherwise, "good" speech. Probably ensured his re-election with that, especially considering the terrible democratic responses.

When all is said and done and the usual posters finish the result is the same. The State Of The Union speech by President trump was a big win for him and for Republicans and did little, if anything to help the Democrats.

Face it kids, it was a win.

Big win in which way? Stongman Trump didn't implicate himself by asking Russia on television to help him defeat Hillary Clinton.

Big win indeed.

Keep 'em comin.

Big political win. Even with Democrats that watched the speech and especially with independents that watched the speech.

Yep. Trump gave this speech & the one at Davos & didn't come across as a complete looney tune either time. Everybody breathed a small sigh of relief. All bets are off for his next rally, however.

Trump never said the KKK or white supremacists were fine people. Why do the progressheviks go the way of lies to discredit Trump when he has a lot of things he can be dinged on?
Little tip for you. If you’re marching with twenty Nazis you’re not a good person. You’re just one of twenty one Nazis marching.

Not having a loss isn't necessarily a win. You grade Trump on so much of a curve not insane is a win in your eyes.

I give him <2 weeks before he does something stupid to step on anything positive he gained yesterday.
