The "holiday" from Kentucky's 6 percent sales tax would be scheduled for the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday in August of 2004 and 2005.

Items that would qualify are clothing up to $150 per item and computers and printers up to $1,500. Any amount of software and school supplies would also be exempt from the tax on that weekend.

Wow, something with MA having the hottest version of the deal (albeit in the smallest window of time). I got an email on this today for MA only, but didn't know about the other states'. Thanks, OP.

Basically any item over $175 will be taxed for the amount over $175, so long as the total for the whole purchase is under $2500 and contains at least one physical item. That's they way I understand it at least.

Illinois with a tax break....yeah right
Like Blagojevich would let that happen. If it was his call, you'd have to pay a $5 tax just to enter the damn store, like you do to go to the casino . INDIANA HERE I COME.

We get taxed enough, and they still can't balance the damn budget. They take like $3 per pack of cigs, $5 bucks to go to the casino, 8% sales tax(more in some towns), Super High property tax, they take enough out of my paycheck, ohh yeah and don't forget the Tri-State.

Thanks for the tax free info.

Unfortunately, GA tax free only covers PCs/laptops under $1500. Its too low to cover my powerbook purchase.

I'll probably have it shipped to one of my addresses in NC or SC where there's no price cap.

CLARIFICATION FOR NORTH CAROLINA:
"Effective October 1, 2003, printers and printer supplies and educational software are no
longer exempt from sales or use tax during the sales tax holiday period. A new definition
of ?computer? was also adopted by the General Assembly effective July 15, 2003. A
computer is defined as ?an electronic device that accepts information in digital or similar
form and manipulates it for a result based on a sequence of instructions.? The new
definition does not include ?peripherals? sold with the computer. Since the definition
does not encompass peripherals, and since the statute authorizing the sales tax holiday no
longer includes printers as items that are exempt during the holiday, computer printers
will be subject to the applicable sales and use tax. In addition, other ?peripherals? are
taxable even if sold with a computer.

For purposes of the sales tax holiday, a computer includes a central processing unit,
monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers since those items are deemed to be necessary in
the operation of the computer. If a retailer sells a computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse,
speakers, printer, or other peripherals as a package, the price of the printer and
peripherals must be separately stated on the invoice and tax charged on the printer and
peripherals. The monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers are not taxed when sold with
the computer provided the combined sales price does not exceed $3,500."

Luckily for all of us in MA, that quoted exception in the OP is completely inaccurate. Here it is, straight from the source (MA Dept. of Revenue):

Exception ? Under G.L. c. 64H, § 6(k) there is no sales tax on any article of clothing unless the sales price exceeds $175; in that case, only the increment over $175 is subject to tax. If, on the sales tax holiday, the price of an article of clothing exceeds the threshold, the first $175 may be deducted from the amount subject to tax. The threshold amount is not increased by $175.

Example ? A customer buys a suit for $2,550. Tax is due on $2,375 ($2,550 - $175).
Note that the exception only applies to individual articles of clothing priced over $175.
