Has anyone got a static ip to work on this network by chance ? I mean i use to be able to just pull any random ip address that was in the pool not being used and use that for my static ip address.

Can anyone confirm this working for them ? I mean when running a web server and email server with DHCP means alot of time it could be done and not working which isnt good for me . So anyone have any suggestions at all ?

You mean you payed for a DHCP setup and you managed to pull down a static IP from their DHCP pool?

Sounds like a poorly configured router to me. I imagine AT&T wised up and cracked down on IP snagging

Is their anyway i can make the lease never expire then ?

Or any suggestions for useing the dhcp cable modem for a web/email server . I mean with the ip changing all the time its really hard to do that . I know thats why they put in dhcp also so people cant do that , but their has to be a way one can still get around it .

hmm.... there are some dynamic DNS services.

http://www.dyndns.org/

There are utilities that will periodically check your IP and update the DNS record on their site... If you can handle a
hostname.dyndns.org address

I have a new ATTBI account myself.

@Home never used to support static IPs before. You always had to run with DHCP, but I have a feeling the IP's were static and they just didn't tell us.

I have a feeling that the IP lease won't run out unless you keep your system/router off for about 3 days. It depends on how they set up the DHCP. The key is the time the IP becomes free. At work, I have DHCP set up to lease IP's for 7 days. If someone turns their system off for a couple days, the IP will still be theirs. It is after they leave for a couple weeks on vacation when a new IP will be given when they reboot. I don't know how AT&T set up their DHCP, but I have to assume it is at least a couple days. It will be interesting to see.

Depends on the ISP really. Mine has no such leinency

My IP will be different, even if I simply reboot my router. Even if it drops the line because of a sudden drop in capacatance or something... Just a few seconds with a dead line and I get a new IP.

@Home did have static IPs. All the DHCP server did was lookup your computer name and spit out the IP assigned to your account. They changed once in a while, but not very often.

AT&T appears to have the same setup, just using the modem's MAC as an ID instead of a computer name. Much better setup IMO.

Oh, and if you need to be static, just use the IP assigned to you, rather than ganking some poor guy's IP, hmm?

I just got a renewal for my IP address from attbi and it is the SAME IP ADDRESS !!!

I was worried about it as well as I have a router and not sure how to use dynamic dns

Also, I am able to get up to 4 DHCP IPs

but the connection is darn slow. I am only getting 10 kb/s to download.com. That's right 10 kb/s

I think AT&T has *REALLY* stretched its network resources to get everyone online in such a short period.

Perhaps the service will improve with upgrades in the next few months?

It really depends on the network. Some people's IP never changes for months, but other people have their address change every few days. A dynamic dns service like zoneedit.com is a good idea.
