I am trying to setup my ftp server behind my linksys router...only thing is i need to use static not dynamic IPs on my internal machines. Can't get it to work tho.

I use the 1-port version with a 10/100 hub, firmware v1.38. Turned DHCP off on the router, set fixed IP for my computers, shut down all the computers, unplugged the router and modem (to clear them and start clean). Came back up, modem then router then computers. No luck, gateway is set correctly, subnet and IP are within the range. could ping and log into router but cant get past it to the net, and yes it was connected (pppoe i manually told it to connect). switched everything back to dhcp and it works. tried setting a DHCP range of only 10 IPs and gave one computer an IP above that but still no avail. Ideas? thanks.

Stupid me...I need to work on my networking knowledge a whole bunch...it was the DNS after all...so RGN and paulson were right on from the start, got it working just dandy now...

Ummmm, I think you have to set up everything in the computers (DNS settings and such) when you're using static for your computers...

I use DHCP, so I can't really help you.

Sorry

well first off i dont see why i'd need DNS, i'm not trying to route a url or anything, i just want to create a static network internally...DHCP creates the problem of possibly changing the IP of my server and thus the port forwarding goes to the wrong computer....

I use DCHP and have port forwarding...

if you don't shut both computers off at the same time, you can't keep the ip's very easily (it's only happened that one time it got mixed up, but it's a really easy task to switch the ip's for the forwarding...)

You need to setup Port forwarding under advanced menu.

ex.

21~21 tcp 192.168.1.111 <----------for ftp
23-23 tcp 192.168.1.111 <----------for telnet

port #_UDP|TCP_Forwarding ip address

or, give the router your nics' mac address. my gf's isp uses the mac address of the nic (and you only get 1) to validate you on their network. work'd for me, nothing else would...

Ok...if you use the new firmware on the routers, there should be a tab on the advanced setup that says DMZ.

Router lesson for those of you who don't know. DMZ stands for De-Militarized Zone. Hope some of you can figure out why they call it that. This will allow that server to be seen and have a public IP so that you can access your FTP.

If you still want it in your internal network, then do what everyone was telling you and foward the FTP ports. Just to let you know, that still leaves you vunerable to attacks through that port. If you were really worried about security.

You said that you use PPPoE. From what I understand, you will have a new IP address from your ISP everytime you log on.
You can set a static IP for your local network, but everytime you connect to your ISP you will have a new IP address for internet access unless you purchase a static IP from them.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...

right the PPPoE is dynamic...but i am talking about behind my router...i just want to assign my server its own internal IP (192.x.x.x) and my other computers their own (192.x.x.y 192.x.x.z etc) so that the when the router is doing port forwarding it will always be forwarding to the right computer
