I haven't used XP since 2006.. even Vista was more stable for gaming but it was annoying.. took me like 2 hours to configure it to my liking.

7 was exactly what I wanted.. just like XP with more stability and without the vista bloat. It's crashed on me twice in 5 years.. once when my hard drive died and second when my gtx 260 died and the video just skewed like crayons.

I'd say if your choice is only xp or 7, go 7 but I am curious how 10 final version turns out.. I'm going to try it out on an old system before I decide if I want to upgrade my main to 10.

Me too i have an old Sony VGN195 laptop and use XP sp3 dual boot with linux and i mostly use Xp for streaming and web browsing and have no issues and have no protection besides Firewall , all you have to do is turn off updates and use Chrome with adblock-plus and it works great

The simple fact is that XP is static. It's not receiving updates any more, and your firewall and anti-virus can only do so much to protect an unsafe OS.

And, like others have said, driver support is non-existent for hardware made in about the last decade.

But I guess it's your hardware. You'll do what you want. I don't even know why you're bothering to ask such an asinine question.

Windows 7 will be supported for many years to come. Go fir it now and if in a year 10 is proving its worth, then get the free upgrade.

XP? Really? What are you planning on doing, using 3GB of RAM in that fancy new build?

Is there even driver support for XP on new hardware?

Seriously, XP shouldn't even be a consideration for a new system. It would be like using 98SE in 2004, the heck would you do that for.

I recall hearing support will end soon, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be like XP where they keep extending it. Heck, lot of companies are still on XP and slowly starting to migrate to 7. Microsoft is absurd if it expects a business to use 8 or 10. Those are not really "businessy" operating systems. Well 10 might be if you can get rid of all the garbage advertisement stuff in the start menu and return to windows classic as well as not require any cloud stuff, but it's still too early to tell.

Mainstream support ends soon. Extended support then kicks in, for security updates only basically. Total support life is usually something like 12 years total give or take.

I'm sure Microsoft expected users to have Win8 in businesses, given that Server 2012 has the same stupid metro layout. Yeah, since when do servers have touch screens?

Check your facts,Win7 mainstream support has already ended,it's now on extended support until Jan 2020,why go with a dying OS,delaying means you only have to move again later.

Dying? LOL

By the time 2020 rolls around and support officially ends, the OP will likely have moved on from this PC already.

Personally, I say go with either 7 or 8->10, whichever is cheaper. 7 is great in that it is more like XP in its native form, while 8/8.1/10 have to be tweaked to look/work like XP/7 (ie boot to desktop, have a working Start button with menus, etc.). That said, 8/10 will likely be more secure and support more/newer software for a longer timeframe (DirectX 12 and so on).

Well done have a cookie, that's my point you have to move forward sooner or later which I stated in my previous post,Win7 less then 5 years to go and every second getting near to EOL.

Regardless for new build ,Win10 next month via purchase or Win7/8/8.1 upgrade is the way to go IMHO,all depends on if he can wait and costs etc...

Gaming wise for DX12 makes sense to go Win10(x64).

Thanks for your replies guys. As little as I like it, Mem you do make a good point about being forced to upgrade again in 5 years time (if I want to stay on a supported OS).

Speaking of Win 10, if I get Win 7 now and download the free Win 10 upgrade it seems I can wait up to one year to install it?

Yes you can wait a year(probably up to 28th July 2016)also remember further improvements like security on Win10 over 7 ,let alone the gaming side of things,no brainer really as a gamer and yes I'm gamer too.
