Steam Account Stolen?

Well I was an idiot, at least I think. Got an IM from a friend on steam saying "Check out my team!" and there was a link that followed. I clicked the link and it was a basic steam community login screen. So I entered my account name and password (I was already logged into steam) and nothing happened, so I thought I would enter it again and nothing. Since nothing happened I decided not to worry about it and go play a game. I double click a server to enter and I get "This account is being used on another computer". At this point I'm thinking "WTF steam, another damn error", I shut down steam and try to re-logon, then I get this beautiful little number here: Text Text

I searched my web history and came up with this site. Contact Valve Support via steampowered.com, with proof of ownership you will get your account back and they will ban the responsible(s)'s own accounts if he/she/they do have one.

The thing is I used a pre-paid debit card which I do not have/own anymore. One of those greendot thingy's from walmart. I'll see what I can find but I doubt anything will come of it. I only had Day of Defeat Source and Team Fortress 2 on it.

I have included a couple screen shots of the logon and the emails I received after visiting the phishing site. Please take these tards off the map so it doesn't happen to anyone else!

Wow that sucks. First time I've heard about that. Hey surgeon it hadn't occurred to me that you play steam games.
PM me your username and I'll add you to my friends list. err...you and whoever else is using your account that is.

Unfortunately, it's far from unheard of. I tend to visit the Steam forums from time to time, and you see too many of these stories about people getting phished. Someone from one of my old clans had it happen to them in exactly the same circumstances as the one here.

I got phished once, and my account got VAC2 banned. It took Valve 5 weeks to return my account and by that time phishers/cheaters got the account VAC2 banned.. and Steam refuses to remove any ban.. So heres is hoping that your account didn't get phished by cheaters.

I got the account back, but Steam still refuses to remove any VAC2 bans. They claim its not in their power to. So that account is basically money wasted.

Naaa. Steam is a work of art. If it defeats other forms of copyright management you will be lucky.
If you can just convince yourself to buy a game or two per year you might come to respect it.

I can now set up a new computer from scratch and Steam is such a good buddy that he'll install ten of my favorite games for me with just a few clicks.

true that. Steam is a great way to install your games without having to find your CDs or CD keys. I have also stepped on a few of my games and broke them, now with steam that wont ever happen lol

The fact that the link was sent from a friend disarm your attentiveness for these things. Anybody would've fallen for it. I wouldn't beat myself too much over it. Thanks for letting us know about the scam. Hope you get a quick and happy resolution.

It's a small price you pay for the convenience that Steam provide. These types of phishing isn't exclusive just to Steam you know? It happens with Ebay, Paypal, Gmail...etc. There are legitimate reasons to hate Steam but this isn't one of them.

Apparently the account sending the link doesn't necessarily have to be hijacked. Typically, you'll see your friend go offline and immediately come back online, then you get the link.

At least that's what they say happens. It's hard to find the absolute truth because most of this comes from the Steam forums where intelligence is nonexistent and every thread devolves into a flame war. Most people won't admit to making an honest mistake like the OP here did by signing into a fake website, so what you end up with are stories that hide the facts and prevent other people from making the same mistakes.

The thing to remember is that Steam could make this process much much simpler. In order for you account to be completely hacked, the email address must be changed. Otherwise, you cold just go in and click "recover password" and change your password to something the account thief does not know and then it is yours again.

Currently, Steam only sends you a notice that your email address has been changed. What they need to do is send you a link that allows you to change your email address back. This would slash their support costs and keep you from having to wait while some hacker/slacker/cracker jerk uses your account and gets it banned.

Why they do it the way they do, I do not know. I find it infinitely frustrating waiting for their responses to get the account back.

By the way, this apparently means that one should NEVER buy steam accounts from anyone under any circumstances, because the original owner can later provide proof of ownership (which the buyer most likely doesn't have) and claim the account back. People can easily be scammed like that. This is probably obvious to many, but I just realized it...

This is one of the reasons why Steam does not want people selling their accounts.
