Sorry for bringing up a old thread but im having the same issue except i have no idea how it got hacked. I was on my comp when steam said it was logging in from another location and i couldn't log in. I checked my email and sure enough i gt a email from steam saying that i changed my email and password. I just emailed them a hour or so back. I hope i can get it back before it gets banned or something.

They must have gotten your original account email/password because doesn't Steam require those items when you try to change either email or password?

You can change the p/w and then change the email, and IIRC neither requires a confirmation click, you just get an email telling you of the change.

The fact that they don't send you a generated link to click to confirm an account change is incredibly stupid and makes it pretty easy to hijack someones account.

I look at your user name, then read your fail story, and I just LOL'd at the irony. So many WoW accounts are hacked this way, they don't even allow clickable links on wow forum now, but people still get their account hacked everyday. The funniest are the community MVPs getting their acct hacked.

Otherwise, you cold just go in and click "recover password" and change your password to something the account thief does not know and then it is yours again.

Currently, Steam only sends you a notice that your email address has been changed. What they need to do is send you a link that allows you to change your email address back. This would slash their support costs and keep you from having to wait while some hacker/slacker/cracker jerk uses your account and gets it banned.

Why they do it the way they do, I do not know. I find it infinitely frustrating waiting for their responses to get the account back.

Your account has been stolen multiple times?

This happened to me a yr ago and it took a few days for Steam to get it sorted and the acct reinstated to me. I thought that was fast! Compared to Varant/Sony took them over 3 weeks to figure it out and get the ball rolling for my then EQ1 acct. arg, bad memories with that (shakes head)

UPDATE: Got my account back today. Pretty fast response. 1 Question. I had WaW on my account and i saw the person playing it. Is it possible for them to steal the cd key from WaW and use it?

It's possible. When you installed the game, the first time you launched it Steam should've popped a window showing you the CDKey. They could've clicked "show key" and written it down.

I don't think it does it for WaW.

Well I was an idiot, at least I think. Got an IM from a friend on steam saying "Check out my team!" and there was a link that followed. I clicked the link and it was a basic steam community login screen. So I entered my account name and password (I was already logged into steam) and nothing happened, so I thought I would enter it again and nothing. Since nothing happened I decided not to worry about it and go play a game. I double click a server to enter and I get "This account is being used on another computer". At this point I'm thinking "WTF steam, another damn error", I shut down steam and try to re-logon, then I get this beautiful little number here: Text Text

I searched my web history and came up with this site. I did not notice the different domain name at the top, and when you enter in your info it defaults you back to the real site. **DO NOT ENTER YOUR INFORMATION ON THE FOLLOWING LINK** [=http://communitysteam. freehostia.com/]http://communitysteam******************[/L] **DO NOT ENTER YOUR INFORMATION ON THIS SITE**

Think I may have been took What say you?

Removed the link, left the address, Oakenfold PC Gaming and Security Mod

EDIT: Got my account back! Text

Thanks steam!

Dude... the EXACT same thing happened to me... I was really stupid. It happened mid-game in Garry's Mod, and then I typed my account and then... I was disconnected mid-game. When it said that the account was being used on another comp, I got really freaked out. I value my account very much, and I'm not that rich so it won't be easy to re-buy all my games and regain my friends... Please valve... PLEASE HELP! :'(
I really don't want my account to get hacked more than almost anything... I had my credit card info on there... can the hacker view it? Oh god please no
I also had so many friends and groups... 800 hours of Garry's Mod... I feel really stupid... D::'( :\

EDIT: I got my account back! Thanks a bunch Gaben!

I wish they could use my Blizzard Authenticator ... never run into problems on WoW.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing coming into this thread.

However, somehow my blizzard account got hijacked even though I had an authenticator. Not sure how that happened as my computer was clean of virus/trojans/spyware and I don't visit phishing sites. But whatever, Blizzard has excellent CS, and my account has been safe ever since.

feel lucky that you got your account back. I hadn't logged in to steam in quite a while (6-8months). Got an email that the email address on my steam account had randomly changed. Went to login..password changed. Contacted steam support, they needed a CD key from a box copy...well i had orange box, hl1, hl2, and day of defeat source on there.... too bad the only game that didnt get destroyed when my apartment flooded last year was HL1...and that key was pre-steam so they wouldn't take it.

Awesome!

I really can't believe so many people fall for these attacks and basically give their information away. It's actually kinda scary.

I know rite?
I feel like a total idiot for following that.
I gave Steam the number I used for the credit card, and I never bought a game from the physical real store. Only online.
Is there anything else I should give 'em? :'(

I've had my account deactivated on two occasions (never had the account hijacked as far as I could tell, it would just tell me it's disabled suddenly) Both times I got the account reactivated using my HL1 cd key and the ATI HL2 voucher (that came with 9800pro's, I believe.)

"If you registered software purchased at a retail location, please write your Support Incident Number or your Steam account username on the quick reference card or sticker above the CD Key and reply with a digital photo or scan of the CD Key. "

^That was what they told me to do in order to recover my account. I replied with the CD key and told them I was unable to scan it as I was heading out to work, though I will later when I get home. By the time I got home, the account was reactivated and good to go.
