Steam: can I play two games at once?

You buy a license for one person to play the game. Not you and anyone you let play it.

If you both play the game, buy two copies. That's the license.

If only she plays the game, get her her own Steam account and buy it there - you CAN play two games at the same time on separate accounts.

Many of these games are availible on steam. Are you telling me that when you buy the steam version of these games, it becomes illegal to play them in multi-player hot-seat mode?

Entirely possibly.
The Steam EULA already supercedes individual game licensing agreements.

EULA are not law, and afaik haven't really been tested in any serious case.

Sometimes you get back door forced into joining Steam. I bought Magicka from direct2drive only to learn AFTER the purchase I had to have Steam to install it. I don't have a Steam account, didn't particularly want one and would have never bought Magicka if direct2drive had revealed this requirement (all they said was it required a third party installer, which is common among casual games).

The description didn't say, I got tricked into that one too. Its not a big deal, I would have bought it anyway, but it was sort of underhanded.
