I won't be touching this "auction" with the worlds longest barge pole. The whole thing is very fishy to me, bring back a proper sale so I can buy more games I will never play...

There are 220,000 gems of 20,000 bids for a profile that expires in a month (more than any front page game - $35-on-sale Alpha Centauri has 70K, Shadow of Mordor 62K).

This auction is pretty stupid anyway, it literally gives an advantage to those with deep pockets. Its pretty much the same as buying the game. Nothing at all here for the little man.

There's something - selling your items or making gems and selling them.

I don't really understand the supply of the auction, all the games I see have 100 supply. Does that mean that if there are 100 of a game and 15 bidders, they will end up giving away 100 copies which means bidder #16 can get it with 1 gem?

All the games on the front page have tens of thousands of bids.

How pack-ratty is it that I have never really used any of the rewards like emoticons and backgrounds, they're useless, but I don't want to sell them?

135 pages with 15 games each (almost 2000 products). There are odd things like some 'learn a language DLC' like Mandarin and Bulgarian with over 5000 bid.

This. I don't care for or understand cards & items. Just sell me more games that I'll never play at cut rate prices.

I could care less about collecting cards and crafting badges. I do however allow myself to get the card drops so I can sell them and get a few free games.

I've read the Steam FAQs on Cards and items repeatedly and I'm still thoroughly confused. Sometimes I get hounded by people wanting items that they think I have.

It seems that with each Holiday sale, Steam gets dirtier and dirtier with their metagame. Maybe we will have straight up poker and black jack next year for coins to trade in on games.

That would be awesome.

Still not getting this at all. Where is anyone getting that many gems when each game only creates at a max 10 cards (if you assume you get more than 1 foil pack) and each card is only worth 1-5 gems?

Not that it matters, I just sell my cards when I get them and get free games that way

The Holiday Profile is now over 1 million gems. lol. And I just noticed that it expires on January 16th, so it only lasts a limited time. smh.

To answer my question, it says you keep the gems and they can be used to get booster packs. BTW, my Civ 5 cards say they are worth 20 gems each.

I had a few Letter Quest cards worth that much and sold them. Letter Quest! Ever hear of the game? No? Most people haven't either. That's what this auction has done to card values. lol.

Is it just me, or does anybody else find the bids on some of these games crazy?

e.g. The current high bid for CS:GO is roughly 220K gems. With gems going for roughly $0.80 per 1k sack, that's $175 for a game which costs less than $20 any day of the week, and has gone on deep discount more times than I care to count.

Go figure.

"How long is my bid good for?
Unless you cancel your bid or you are the top bidder and win the game, your bid will carry over after each auction round."

That's the part that irritates me. When 1 round ends the bids should all disappear and you have to bid again. Doubles as a way to keep people bidding and active in their little game... and also gives the "little guy" a chance at actually winning something for less than 50,000 gems lol.

Basically it's what Plimogz said - people are paying way over retail for stuff now. Even if they say no, I traded and got everything for free so I'm not paying anything... well guess what? For each one of those 1000 gems spent you gave up about 65 cents and rising of real money (or whatever the $.77 sack of gems is currently after fees are taken out).

And +1 to the poker and blackjack.

If you are selling cards for gems, you are doing it wrong. Imo, if you are bidding on games you are doing it wrong also.

Cards are only worth a paltry sum of gems (around 5), while even the most common emoticon is worth 80 gems.

So if you sell that card you would have gotten 5 gems for, for even the lowest amount of all cards ($.06), you could buy three emoticons ($.02 - if any left) and turn those into 240+ gems.

Doing it right - sell three cards, buy cheap emoticons and backgrounds and turn them into gems, buy booster packs for gems (should have 600-750) then sell the booster for $.50. Now buy 25 emoticons, turn into gems...repeat.

Got bored doing this, but tripled my booster pack amount for the upcoming winter sale. Since you get items/emoticons/etc for crafting badges and an extra sale card, I'll open all my boosters once the sale starts and make badges, selling the winter sale cards for $.50 early on before they drop to $.10 in a few days like they always do.

Mathematically none of it makes sense. There has to be a glitch/hack somewhere that is making free gems.

I've stopped giving a crap about Steam's meta-games they do every time there's a major sale. The holiday auction is just another way of sucking money out of you. Nobody wins, except for Valve.
