Steam is already running

Hi everyone,
I cannot get steam to run. It's a new install. Everytime I try it updates to 26% then goes to an error screen saying:

"Steam is already running.
You may only run one copy of steam at a time."

I've disabled the auto run feature at startup, still nothing.
Steam Help only gives one answer about a malware program that I'm fairly certain I don't have. I cannot find a trace of it anywhere.

Any Ideas?

That would be my guess also this is a software problem probably better off to post in the gaming section.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I searched quite a bit before I posted this, and actually found the link Sam25 posted (thank you though).
I have looked in the task manager and it isn't running,
I have checked into the compatability mode and it never was selected on my files.
I have tried deleting the ClientRegistry.blob file in Steam and having the update load a new one, which it does, but that doesn't work either.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Steam.

Steam support suggests a malware program problem, and provides a link for a program that will fix it, but the link is dead. I have run Spybot and Adaware with no problems noted.
I have searched my drives and the Registry for any traces of the program and can't find a thing. So I don't think that's it.

Any other thoughts?

I would create a new user and reinstall the software under the new user and see if this fixes the problem. This could fix it but it depends on how smart the person was that designed the malware/spyware or possibly virus you possibly have.
