Steam is frustrating me lately

The last 2 games I bought, it downloads all but the last 100-200 MB and then stops and says "suspended". I click pause and it pauses it and I click resume and it just sits there. have to close Steam and open it again to get it to finish.

I notice that happens from time to time when steam tries to update TF2 and CS:S.

Yeah, that issue isn't uncommon. I'm pretty sure Valve is well aware of it because it happens to a lot of people (usually with games like CS:S). Just make sure Steam itself is always fully updated, and it might help to change your download server location in the settings. Mine's currently set to Denver. Doesn't seem to be having any problems.

Happening with me too. I also don't like it downloading patches when I playing online.

Another thing, I turned off Steam in msconfig start up, and now when I turn on steam manually I have to be careful not to click install. I have to click cancel on the window that pops up, THEN steam starts.

Had some issues last night with a few games but blamed that on my recent formats, old steam directory and usiing Steam Tool to create NTFS junctions so that I can transfer a game onto my SSD and benefit from the loading speed increases.

Funny I've had a few problems with Steam lately too. It seemed to be trying to do something when I was shutting down my PC and when I restarted it steam.exe was gone! Completely vanished, and the steam support "solution" was irrelevant to my problem. Few niggles since I system restored it (Windows fixing rather than causing a problem for once!) but Steam ahs been weird for me lately. It was fine for years before that though

Whenever I run into the suspended download problem, I simply try and launch the game and it proceeds to finish downloading. At least that always work with TF2 updates.

It's frustrating me too because I just picked up Duke Nukem Forever for $10 and Jagged Alliance for $6. Damn them and their sales!

No problems here then again me and my friends have like our own backup steam gaming download server. So whenever the servers do overload we still get our maximum speed (2.1 MB/sec and 19.2 MB/sec) Wish I had the faster connection. Being able to download more than one game at once at maximum speed must rock.

I also noticed that last time I went to play Black Ops I need to choose "Do not keep this game up to date", exit then select "Always keep this game up to date".

After that it downloaded a new patch. But even verifying the game cache did not force the update.

I have also had the exact same issue with downloads hanging as you have.

It isn't perfect or ideal, but you can alt tab out of the game and resume the download.

The thinking is probably that it eats up bandwidth that may actually be necessary for the game, and it's not always obvious whether or not the game is online. It's probably better to deal with delayed downloads that people blaming ping spikes in online games on steam.

Maybe I'm thinking of windows updates at 3am... been known to play all nighters from time to time.

I've only encountered this with CS:S updates and since I never play that game it's not really an issue for me. Every other game downloads quickly and without issue thankfully.
