It seems according to a few here Steam is the definitive source on GPU market share rather than Jon Peddie and Mercury Research.
Steam is a better source for GPU market share than Jon Peddie research. Steam = real gamers, Jon Peddie = estimates based on company financial results (which are already imprecise because AMD no longer even breaks out dGPU revenue).
People just want to use information sources which fit their narrative.
Some people do, but others are just trying to use the best data available to them. If you want to know how a particular SKU is doing in the marketplace, you literally have no better source of data than Steam HW survey.
Anyway Nvidia will continue to be dominant making record profits and margins.
Only if they continue to put out excellent products. Execution on Pascal has been good, but they need to follow this up with an even stronger Volta. I am optimistic, but these aren't things we can ever take for granted 100%.
Anyway, NVIDIA is actually in kind of a strange position. They have never had a lineup as competitive as they currently do (even their X60 product is more competitive today than it was in prior gen), nor has their competition just been so late to showing up to a fight in recent memory. Over the next 2-3 quarters they are well positioned to grab a ton of share, especially at the high end, but they really can't afford to sit and bask in the glory of Pascal -- they need to get Volta out ASAP to further cement their lead if they want to keep this trajectory going.
AMD is failing to compete and Polaris is a major disappointment. AMD are not learning from the mistakes of the past. They continue to hype up products, overpromise and underdeliver.
That is the purpose of marketing, irrespective of product quality. Don't blame AMD for this one, they're just doing their jobs.
This is a sign of a company which does not have the R&D and execution necessary to compete at this level and rely on marketing and hype to push products. If those fail AMD finally resort to price cuts to move product.Sad but true. I think both Vega and Zen will disappoint.
I think expectations for both Vega and Zen are so high that they will disappoint.
