Am I the only one who thinks it odd to be announcing you're going to have some announcements?

Left for Dead 3 followed shortly thereafter by Left for Dead 4 :awe:

The announcement is they've switched to an episodic release schedule for Left 4 dead. This will allow them to release more content, faster. Left 4 Dead 2: Episode 1 will be releasing soon.

Am I the only one who thinks it odd to be announcing you're going to have some announcements?
You're not alone. And Valve isn't the only one doing it!

Really the only thing they could offer that I want is HL3. But given the URL and the blurb at the bottom, I'm guessing this is more about new programs/features rather than actual games.

Hmmm, probably...

Announcement #1: Left 4 Dead 3 (maybe on a new Source engine)
Announcement #2: New Source Engine (?)
Announcement #3: Exclusive L4D3-themed hats for TF2 for pre-ordering L4D3

It can't be H-L3 since we now know that Valve isn't working on it at all due to MOCAP technology(ies) not meeting their standard for a would-be H-L3. So whatever it is they'll announce it probably won't be very exciting (only thing I'd care about would be Half-Life 3 and nothing else).

It's was accidentally leaked a few weeks ago that they're working on L4D3, and Gabe Newell confirmed himself they were working on a new engine (and it will debut with a new game). Safe to say it will probably be L4D3.

Wrong. HL3 is definitely in the works, and has been in the works for a long time now. There's been too much leaked evidence and insider info to assert otherwise.

Has HL3 actually been announced or people just messing around posting some of these pics?

Maybe it's wrong, but maybe it's not.

I wasn't inventing the "H-L3 isn't worked on due to MOCAP issues" part, you know. It's John Patrick Lowrie (voice actor) who said that. Apparently, he said (as far as he knows) Valve wasn't/isn't working on H-L3, period (for now) due to technologies in the MOCAP industry not meeting their expectations, or whatever it is they don't like about the latest MOCAP stuff around. Do I think that Valve went bunkers if that's true? Yes. Simply because to me H-L2's animations were more than enough to convey, portray and express believable-enough emotions without the need of cut-scenes or quick time events to tell a story. They managed to do it with H-L2, all they had to do for H-L3 was to increase polygons count and textures resolution and they'd still have sold millions.

Do I know for sure what Valve is up to? Of course not I'm just Mr. Joe everyone without much evidence other than what John Patrick Lowrie said. But am I ready to immediately disbelieve what he said? No. That's simply because... well, you know, Episode Two was released in 2007, we're in 2013 and the next big Valve project appears to be L4D3. I certainly think that something isn't right concerning H-L3, even if the true reason isn't the MOCAP stuff that supposedly bugs them that much. It could be something else entirely, maybe they're waiting to see if they could release it for Linux as well, or maybe they're developing it for the XBOX One and/or PS4 and want a multi-platforms release. I don't know what's going on but what I do know right now is that H-L3 is freaking overdue and should have been released at least two years ago by now.

If, however, they do announce Half-Life 3, I'll probably be the first to come back in this thread and kick my own ass for apparently being naive (albeit with a reason that is called "waiting since 2007 for a damn sequel").

ROFL. There's never been evidence, there's only been fan created "leaks."

There's been a shitload of evidence.

http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Future_of_the_Half-Life_series

Linked above is a comprehensive list of all the news and information surrounding Half Life 3's development, no matter how vague. The juiciest, most telling piece IMO, is the following:

In April 2012, Gabe Newell was interviewed by the Seven Day Cooldown podcast. His interviewer asked, "My final question - and the question in the back of all your fans' minds and everyone has been waiting to ask you for a long time: When can we expect the release of Ricochet 2?"

An audibly amused Newell responded, "In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance, we end up changing our minds as we're going through and developing stuff, so as we're thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you're saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we'd like to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2. The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we're going through would probably drive people more crazy than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what's happening next."

It's apparent that the term "Ricochet 2" is a code-name for "Half-Life 3" as Ricochet itself was a multiplayer mod for the original Half-Life that is considered one of the worst games Valve has released (and more importantly, does not even have a plot). When asked if those working on the project have moved on to other games, he responds, "No, everybody who has worked on Ricochet 2 continues to work on Ricochet 2."

So yeah, as of 2012, it's safe to say HL3 is very much an active work in progress.

Considering all the referencing to the Steam platform and the living room... good chance it's a slow reveal of a Steam based console. Very small chance it's an actual game release in there.

Although I would expect them to release a new game coinciding with the release of a Steam box sort of console. Doubtful on HL3 though.. maybe TF3 or L4D3 being much more likely.

Yeah I'm definitely not expecting an HL3 announcement. Whatever they announce will be exciting though. An official Valve-branded Steambox would be cool to see.
