STEAM... "upgrade" or no?

I see there are still some servers that don't require it, but are these a majority or a minority of active servers these days?

Also, if I decide I don't like it can I go back to using the non-steam client?

Give me some general impression/opinions as well, if you'd like.

yes, during the install process just choose to keep the old copy of files, and you can start counterstrike or any other game as you would usually.

yeah! Just make a backup of your install and then install steam. It installs in a different place than the old WON version did anyway so it wont overwrite your stuff

Uh, steam works fine these days, upgrade!

All the bitching about steam was from like the first month where the new version of CS sucked and the steam client was having a decent number of problems.

If you havn't seen steam, you should be thoroughly impressed by how quickly and fluidly you can find a server to play on and join it.

Be aware though, leaving steam running in the background can be a large waste of resources if you are playing a non-steam related game. Also, sometimes if you close it fast right after it opens (on a fresh reboot), the process gets hung up and you have to go into processes and kill it.

Steam (now at least) is a pretty good program. When it first came out, it was full of bugs, but the idea of Steam is excellent. Allowing users to easily upgrade to other mods and versions and keeping them all seperated. An ingame messaging system and auto-retry for servers is nice also. Oh and did I mention you can play chess and checkers while you wait?

I agree,I upgraded in the early days and it was a nightmare,but now most of the bugs have been fixed and Steam is now very stable for me,also the auto update is a nice feature,nowadays you really need Steam if you want to play CS,DoD etc....

Yeah Steam isn't half bad now, though early on it earned itself the nickname we still use for it: Steaming pile.

Well, in case anyone is still watching I did upgrade and.... I like it!

The only complaint I have is that you can't really bind stuff in the console anymore (at least I did not figure out how it could be done).

Other than that, I'd have to say I like the improvements. Especially the fact that what seemed like long-forgotten mods (TFC, for example) are being upgraded and tweaked again.

STEAM is horrible! Too many updates and the delayed awp totaly kills cs. I still play 1.5 there are some good servers still out there , but not too many of them... Forcing me to play STEAM sometimes Balt you can still bind stuff in the console, its much easier writing little buy scripts in STEAM than 1.5 look here

I still play TFC now and then,it`s a hard life being an engineer and building those teleports entrances and exits but yes it does look better now.

I still play and run a cs1.5 server.

I ran 1.6/steam on my server for about a week but reverted back to 1.5 after seeing more hacking and obnoxious players in one week than I had seen on 1.5 for the enitre past year.

There are actually a number of things that I like better about 1.5.
Will have to switch to steam eventually though when hl2 comes out.

Rumor has it that multiplayer for hl2 will be cs.

Yep, still (or once again) running 1.5.

When it comes to cs, I am a bit of a purist, so no mods other than admin mod, statsme and hlguard (also have hook mod, but only run it once in a blue moon).
