Might not be related to you but I had a similar issue due to a bad disk. Replacing the disk fixed the issue. God I hate windows; if linux I would spotted the issue right away.

I've been having issues lately with Steam specifically playing Counter Strike GO. Many times when I'd enetr the game it would tell me some files were missing signatures and I would not be able to play in VAC secure servers.

Some googling told me to "verify game cache" which seems to work when this happened (probably 10 times over the course of a few months). Well it has now happened again except the typical fix will not work. I uninstalled the game, cleared my download/temp folder and reinstalled. Tells me CS needs an update.. Okay so I download the update and what do you know..? The DL fails because the "update has a corrupt file". Tried uninstall and repeat this process a few times with no luck. I'm getting really pissed because I am a part of a community with online friends and people I chat with daily, and now we can't play. I know Steam will be useless with tech support...ugh.

have you tried the following?

1) logging out of steam
2) deleting/renaming ClientRegistry.blob
3) restarting steam

another option is to uinstall the game and delete everything from the global offensive folder. redownload.

sometimes if you scroll way up in the console after you get that message, you'll see the name of the file that's corrupt. you can delete just that file and redownload.

the problem is if you keep getting that error message, you'll get a temp vac ban. something like a week.

Getting the message right as I enter the loading screen into CS..Not in game. I've only ever used console while in game so please specify what you mean if I am mistaken.

What folder is clientregistry.blob in.. and is .blob a real file extension...?lol

Disk....? As is... the hard drive? This was a digital download, no disks for the game if that's what you mean.

it's the file that contains steam preferences:
http://www.extremusgaming.com/articles/2012/12/renaming-or-removing-clientregistry-steam

i did actually mean the in-game console so your case i would try deleting the files from the directory and reverify. it should rebuild your files for you.

Thanks I will check that link out tonight when I'm home. Likely sounds like I'll be deleting the entire folder and starting from scratch. Yay to re-downloading the hundreds of maps I've played over the years...

Should be a folder with all of your downloaded maps in it, just save the folder and put it back after you reinstall.

I'm not defending bad customer service, but it's understandable why they don't have phone support. Just imagine every time someone's parents change the wifi password, or someone's never-rebooted-Windows-Vista computer has a problem, they call and tie up a customer service rep.

I want Steam sales and to keep the games cheap! That'll suck to be on a receiving end when you have a legitimate Steam-related issue, but it's there to keep the games cheap, and weed out the dummies.
Excellent points.

I have no real complaints about Steam over the decade I've had it and honestly the only reason I ever buy a game not on Steam is if the developer has its own mandatory Steam-light, but it's worth pointing out that while most of us have no problem waiting a couple days for an email support response, it had damned well better be a good, relevant response. Nothing worse than waiting days on a response only to get a 15 second cursory canned response that doesn't even address your issue, much less what you said about it.

Getting the message right as I enter the loading screen into CS..Not in game. I've only ever used console while in game so please specify what you mean if I am mistaken.

I've had the same problem when I was losing a hard drive, intermittent problems on specific games that aren't fixed by replacing the file listed. Evidently what I transferred over was already corrupt. Deleting everything Steam and rebuilding on the new drive fixed all my problems without having to resort to tech support.

It's possible my drive is going bad. I've been getting BSODs lately but I figured the problem wa sin the memory. Been to lazy to run memtest to know for sure. Also too lazy to buy a new HD and transfer over all of my files etc. I guess I can try the uninstall, deleting the CSGO folder and reinstalling.

Had steam for 7 years now, the one time I had a problem where someone hacked my account it only took 30 minutes to get it back, contacted customer service, they asked me to send a picture with my username and date in it and the physical official CD key of a game attached to the account, I happened to have CoD:MW2 sitting there with the CD key still in the box, took a picture, sent it in. BAM, account was mine again.

No complaints from me.

Yeah, after reading your first post in this thread just now, my first thought was "failing hard drive", and after reading the rest, it's somewhat reaffirmed. I use a program called HDDTune Pro for checking my hard drives. HDD Scan will work as well, and it's free, but it doesn't work on drives above 3TB... because it runs out of memory during the scan.

i have never had any reason to work with steam customer service, but I do suspect they get blamed for many PEBCAK problems. or issues with the software and system configurations outside of steams control

I didn't read too much into this thread, but I'll say that steam's customer service has been MUCH worse than Origin's in my experience. I had my account hacked a while back when I turned off steamguard(turned it back on but I fucking hate it). It took steam customer service SEVEN days just to get back to me, and I'm betting the only reason they did respond is because I blew the issue up on reddit. Most people on reddit were calling me dumb and blaming me for getting my account hacked, rather than focusing on why Valve had not responded to me on a non-holiday week for seven effing days.

When they did respond (on reddit to save their asses), they said something about a blizzard keeping them from getting my messages to customer service, as the person handling my case was trapped in said blizzard. My reply was "why couldn't you just turn my effing account off until then?". I then again got berated for not keeping steamguard on, or getting hacked in the first place.

I lost my account for a week, spent 7 days watching the hacker play on my account and delete my friends and add his own, while talking to me on my brothers account bragging how he "now owns my account". I spent 7 days in fear of the hacker using my account to get me vac banned with 90+ games on the account. I still think the only reason it got handled on day 7 is because I blew it up on reddit; they even replied on reddit first.

Origin on the other hand? I've never had a single complaint with them, granted I only own 5-7 games on it. The one time I was "not happy" was when the live CS rep didn't give me a 50% off coupon for some game, but gave me a 30% coupon. Can't hate that.

Every single post about how long a user has used Steam without having issues should be deleted. They are not relevant to this discussion, which is not Steam's service as a whole, but their customer service.

I haven't had to call Charter in months, but that doesn't make them a fantastic company. And it has no bearing on how they treat me/handle the situation when I do call in.

Yep your hard drive. The game is downloaded and written to .....

Okay well I uninstalled Steam..Reinstalled it and downloaded CSGO again. Dl'ed the update and... what do you know? Same problem as before.

Could anybody explain to me why having a small part of my HD be corrupt would make an update fail?

And are there any solutions to fix the HD other than buy a new HD?

I have used Steam for years and it used to be great but I have been having a few problems lately, unfortunately. It seems to be getting so big that it’s creaking at the seams. There are so many users now. I also was not impressed by the generic copy+paste response I got to my last few problems. I hate the way offline mode does not work properly if you have any sort of problem with your internet connection and a few of my friends have been banned just for editing .cfg files which is sometimes totally necessary!

If I ever have had an issue with an online service I generally have sent a ticket into customer service, or used the forums of said service. I think most of these services are moving to an online model. A model in which you submit tickets and use the forums to get help rather than phone in. It keeps their costs down and allows users to also help, which many will help on a forum.
It also means that if there is an issue with the game and a user finds a fix before the company does, they can then post that fix in an easy place where everyone can see it.

It's frustrating when you don't have a place to call. Apparently, a member earlier in the thread already posted a phone number so it seems like you didn't even try too hard to find the number which leads me to believe you probably also didn't try too hard to get your problem fixed.

I've used steam since the days it was made and I've had MANY issues with the service. But those days are gone and if you're having an issue there are so many people who are usually willing to help online that it's VERY hard to believe that you can't have fixed it.

the only problem i have ever had with steam is the anti cheat software for red orchestra 2

no other games that i have have ever had any problems with any anti cheat software

seems like some were recommending that you run your internet connection directly to your computer and not use a wifi but is that really necessary?

the game would kick you out with speed hack warning after 5 to 10 minutes and during every match

and there were a ton of other people that also had this issue

actually just went to steam today and grabbed the game for free

free is free

hopefully it works this time

Easy if your writing to the same location on an HD where there are already bad sectors. Windows will want to keep your HD defragged which means keeping files together that need to be together. Which means if there is a broken spot between file A and file c and you are trying to place file B, Windows is likely to try to put file B right on the broken spot. The bigger issue is that you may have bad sectors that hasn't been marked and reallocated. If that is what is happening, it will only be down hill from here.

As to a fix. If its a file system issue a chkdsk /r might help. If its a bad sector issue then the drive is on its way out.

Been using steam since Half Life 2 release, though my first experience with Valve software was with the release of Half Life.

I have maybe 200 or so games on my profile. Never had an issue outside of the occasional compatibility problem if I install an ancient game on a newer OS.

I've never felt a need to reach out to their Support.

So I downloaded Seagate Seatools to check my HD. So far I passed the Disk Self Check and the Short Generic test. Currently running the long generic test. If I pass that then..I'm assuming my HD is good and I'm back to square one.

Would a defrag help?

wow.. go away a few days.. I wonder if i can take credit for this thread. Somebody was talking Origin (different thread a week or two ago) and I quoted some BBB numbers.. (origin has way more complaints per game count then Valve by a wide margin).. it was just to show actual complaints per game count.. not that the BBB was a good source.. By amount of games per service Origin has less games, but way more complaints to the BBB. Complaints are by people (smart or not) the actual rating by BBB is worthless, but those complaint numbers are legit.

my bad for starting this if i did.

Dude grow up, the BBB is a rating of organizations and companies. I never said I was going to have them "trembling" in their boots.. jesus. BBB can't enforce anything they just arbitrate or try to help with resolutions and give ratings.
dude why even mention the BBB...me thinks it is you who needs to grow up or grow a pair...
