nothing special about HL2's engine . . . the least capable of the 'modern' engines
:Q

I resemble that remark

I don't care about the engine, I just know the game as a whole blew me away. Not a lot of games are able to do that.

maybe i should have bolded it myself.

HL2 is a decent game and i enjoyed playing it. . . .

. . . otoh, i did not care for Ep1

. . . and the Souce Engine is excellent for older/midrange rigs . . .

Have not tried Ep1 yet, though I have yet to hear a glowing review, so I may skip it.

I think my rig is fine and HL2 looks amazing at 1920x1200 everything totally maxed, I don't care what anyone says

Good for you. DOn't let anyone change your opinion. Myself, thinks that HL2 looks INCREDIBLE at just 1280*1024.

i just wouldn't use "incredible" to describe an Engine that has no Shadows and lighting . . . turn on that dinky flashlight in EP 1 and notice that there are NO interplay of shadows . . . the REASON the light is so DULL is that you don't notice.

Contrast that with Q4's real flashlight or Gamebryo Engne . . . light a Torch in an Oblivion Cave and notice the shadows dance and interact with other shadows. Source simply "lacks".

Don't let the Truth change your opinion about Source.
:Q

Wow, I never noticed the lack of shadows in source.
I still like the Jupiter FX engine in F.E.A.R. more than any other engine.

although the game is a bit dark overall (mostly to be scary), the FEAR engine has some incredible special effects, visuals and lighting.

that is because the Artists at Valve have some serious talent . . . they know how to hide the shortcomnings of their engine . . .

i guess Source's Motto Should be:
"We Look Great!
[. . . if you don't look too closely"]

Gamebryo [Oblivion's engine] gets my 'vote'.

FEAR has some superb particle effects and excellent Enemy team-AI. . . . however, it does lack variety and is rather short for a full-priced game.

Ep1 is the Epitome of BORING . . . and a 'rip' for $19.95
(unlike HL2 . . . a well-rounded FPS)

Gamebryo, while heavy on the resources, does produce nice results.

However, if you want to see a *real* demonstration of just how much can be done with the Gamebryo engine, take a look at the Gothic 3 screenshots, which are pushing photorealism on the environments.

Gamebryo is constantly evolving . . . like Unreal's Engine . . . and Oblivion "left out" quite a bit to allow for it to run on older rigs . . .
. . . i imagine Gothic 3 will be similarly 'dumbed down' for release . . .
. . . i am also looking forward to the Oblivion expansion pack as they usually 'tweak' the Engine a bit for an x-pack.

Stop playing in PU-55-Y mode. Crank up the difficulty and you're gonna feel that AI. FEARs two big features: Great story line, Painfullly smart AI. The graphics are a bonus.

I'll give it a try tomorrow, but I am not getting my hopes up. I started COD2 last night...now there is a game!!

cod2 was fun, but it was sort of easy mode. you move a bit forward, get shot a bit, hide somewhere and let your guys move up and mop up the bad guys, rinse and repeat.

I could see that happening, but I just started it and it seems pretty cool so far. I like how you move into different scenarios playing different charachters, plus the semi-historical slant to it is interesting.

I am surprised how high I can turn the settings up without slow down particularly with all of the bodies and debris flying around
