I was looking at them and honestly some of them are a good deal! I've played WAR and WoW and pretty much all the standard MMO's but I was thinking of maybe buying Eve.

Are any of the MMO's on sale worth a shot? I feel I need something for summer.

Eve is probably the most complicated non newcomer friendly MMO ever made. You're still a noob after playing that game for a year.

Also in EVE it is important to remember that you do not level up your skills by fighting... they are based on real life time. You start a skill and it may take 30 days for it to complete. At first it is great because they take 20 minutes. My last skill was 3 weeks.

There are skills that take MONTHS to train. Been a while since I've played EVE but some of the higher tier tech2 skills take TONS of time for level 5.

I think I'm finally and totally burned out on MMOs. For me it started back with DAoC when it first launched (end of 2000?). They are all basically the same at their cores. Nothing but grindfests and a race to get the latest item in some raid so you too can be uber at play. They do have a nice social aspect to them though. Which is what makes them so popular I guess. Its what got me into them in the first place. My friends wanting me to play with them and all that. Not that there is anything wrong with that mind you. Not much has changed with them though. Just the theme or world or age time you play in. The wife and I have been discussing getting a Wii so we can play some nice uncomplicated games together. Gawdz... I think I'm getting old! LOL

eve's learning curve relative to other mmo's

edit for link fail.

edit2 for double link fail.

funny, but it says popular mmos. since when was any game on there besides WoW ever popular?

lineage, lineage 2.

everquest?

everquest had a nice niche market, but its subcribers peaked in the hundreds of thousands.

lineage went well above 5 million at some point, and still has something like 2-3 million subscribers.

I think it says somewhere on the product page that it won't work with existing accounts. I imagine trial accounts qualify as preexisting, so... (Right there with you, though. I'm not sure I want to start over either.)

Everquest sold over a million copies. I remember when they announced that. Or was it E2? One of them sold over a million copies. I was working a second job at Burger King at the time and one of the kids there was telling me about the game although I never tried it. Any game that sells a million copies is popular in my thinking. Heck, DAoC was popular for a while and it only got up to about 350,000 subscribers at its peak.

You guys fail at reading. He was asking which of the listed MMO's in that chart were popular besides WoW.

Lineage/Lineage II/EQ are not on that chart.

EQ sold over a million copies, but its subscriber base peaked around 650,000. EQ2 peaked at less.

Theres only 4 MMOs to have 1million+ active subscribers. WoW withover 10million, Lineage I that peaked around 3.6million, Lineage II that peaked at 2.2million, and Runescape that hit just over 1million.

WAR hit a million but didnt sustain it and quickly plummeted.

For the record. MMOGs can be profitable if they can sustain ~250k subscribersfor a couple years.

I mean Asheron's call was profitable enough for Turbine to buy the franchise back from MS, and go on to gets shit loads of funding from venture capitalists/investors.

LOTR is doing more than decently well. WoW is and will always be an outlier. There will NEVER EVER be another MMOG as successful as WoW.

Really, the only MMOGs that have hit over 1million active subscribers have had HUGE Korean followings, including WoW where 35-40% of the active population resides in South Korea.

For the folks that are into EvE but don't have a second account yet this Steam deal may be worth it to you. I've found it very handy to have my second account over the years I've played. Especially for things like acting as a scout, hauling, etc. I haven't been training the characters like I should have been but my indy alt is getting more and more useful. She can fly the T2 haulers and use a covops cloak (god I love using that with the viator) as well as use the Hulk properly. So put it into consideration.

What someone has failed to mention re: EQ is that when EQ was around, there were many less internet users around.

Nowadays, everyone and their cat has their own internet connection. Of course MMO's have many more people now, their potential customer base is exponentially higher than it was in the late 90's.

I did not get internet (56k modem) until 2000/2001.
