I've never used it before. Now, I'm thinking of buying Left4Dead from it. I have a desktop PC at home and my brother has his laptop. (forget system requirements, we fulfill them just fine)

If I register myself on STEAM and buy the game, with the same account, can I install it on my brother's laptop?

I do NOT want piracy-related suggestions.

At a very basic level, what I need to know is, to play a LAN game with my brother, do I need to buy the game twice ? If so, do I need 2 STEAM accounts ... etc?

You can both play the game on different machines, but not at the same time. You need two different accounts each with a purchased copy.

I believe if you just want to play on LAN you can. You can both log in in offline mode and just join each other through LAN.

Hmmmm... But then you'd be trying to join up with the same CD Keys if the game is still using them. Some of the Steam games I have still come with a traditional CD Key.

I don't know weather this applies for L4D but i have tried creating a LAN game in my older Source based games and it would not let me when Steam was in offline mode.

I can not see a way around it without dabbling with cracks.

I have been able to get this to work without too much trouble and completely legitamately. Download the dedicated server to one machine and then have others join.

We had three playing at a time on one account only. Was not sure if we were in offline or not. We were very suprised that we were able to do so which made it very convienent in a LAN setting. I cannot give too many specifics right now but know that it worked atleast a month ago.

You can get multiple people playing on a LAN campaign or versus with only one key...i won't go into specifics, since i'm not sure how frowned on that'll be.

But it can be done, & it's using some simple console commands, not cracks or hax...

Hmmm... using this method, is it possible to have a dedicated server and a client running on the same machine? As I mention, all we have are 2 PC's.

I'm wondering, does STEAM have any free offerings? I've never used it before and I'm thinking of trying out a demo or something if it's there. To see how things work, the connection speed ... etc.

Hi Guys,

sorry chronodekar to hijack your thread, i had a steam related question that you guys might be able to help with.

How big are the downloads? say i was to purchase GTA IV how big of a download would it be?

The reason i ask is i currently have a 3 mobile portable broadband connection with a limit of 2GB per month.

my assumption is that even though the files will be well compressed they will still be fairly sizeable.

anyone able to help?
