Rechargeable batteries do not retain charges as well as Alkaline batteries. You may have to change batteries in the smoke detectors every other month if you are using rechargeables vs. up to a year for Alkaline batteries. Rechargeable batteries are great for high drain usage such as digital cameras and camera flashes. You may wish to stick with Alkaline batteries for alarm clock backups or smoke detectors.

CPU in Edison, NJ has scads of AAA but no more AA's.

Didn't see any at all in Garden City--

There wasn't any limit on purchase quantities, which is probably why they were all gone.

The Maha MH-C204F charger is very good. It charges the batteries in a couple of hours, then stops as it should. It can charge up to 4 AA, 4AAA, or 2 AA + 2 AAA at once. Here's a better description:

I just picked up the $9.99 Rayovac charger when I bought the batteries. It is low-tech, but looks like it will get the job done.

Scored 4 packs!!! $21.00 including tax. Actually, to be correct, it's buy one at $9.99 and get the 2nd pack for $0.01.

Thanks guys, now i have plenty of juice for my power hungry digital camera.

Anyway, as Richard98 said, the Maha MH-C204F charger is very good. It charges up quite fast and has the re-condition function. If we can get NIMH batteries this cheap, who cares if fast charging is bad for them in the long run?

Sale ends on Saturday, but assuming that the local stores don't receive more stock, the deal will be over long before then.

If this deal is no good for you then dont forget that Sams club has that Energizer bundle. Its 8 batteries and a charger for $19.99 (rebate wont work on it though). These batteries are sweet because theyre 1700mAH instead of 1600 on this deal.

That coupon isnt on fw. I managed to get it a few weeks ago but it was a pain. you have to go to energizers website to dig up the customer service number. give them a call and request it then they'll snail mail it to you. i managed to lose mine so sorry i cant scan it.

<< Edit: The AAs are 1600 mAh & the AAAs are 550 mAh. >>

As someone else pointed out, some stores have 700 mAh AAA's. At the store I was at, some packs were 650's (capacity marked on the back), while others were 700 (marked on the front). You have to be careful when buying these things because it seems like part of the reason (maybe the main reason) is to clear out the rest of their old stock.

I went to CompUSA last night and they were sold out of all 4 packs for both AAA and AA. They did have 8 packs of the 1600 AA's and let me substitute the single 8 pack for two 4 packs. Got 8 1600 AA's for $9.99.

Will I be ok charging these in a Quest 16hr charger?

<< Can someone explain why NiMH batteries should never be used in smoke or carbon monoxide detectors? Rayovac FAQ doesn't say why.
The reason is rechargables won't slowly lose their power like non rechargeables. With a smoke alarm, you could be without protection
in a matter of minutes or so using rechargeables. Rechargeables stay at a peak and drop very rapidly.

http://www.rayovac.com/products/recharge/nimh_faqs.shtml

<< Q: Can NiMH batteries be used in any device that takes alkaline batteries?
A: Yes, you can use the comparable NiMH battery size in any device that uses alkaline batteries. For example, if you typically use AA alkaline batteries, you can use AA NiMH also. However, NiMH batteries perform best in high-drain devices that use a great deal of battery power. These would include items like digital cameras, handheld TVs, two-way radios and personal organizers. For low-drain devices, such as pagers, handheld calculators, remote controls and flashlights, Rayovac Rechargeable Alkaline is the best choice. NiMH should never be used in smoke or carbon monoxide detectors!

Need a great charger? Here you go:

QuickCharger

I have had one for about a year and this one does everything, and displays the current function on it's LCD
screen. It automatically determines if the batteries should be conditioned, slow charged, fast charged,
discharged, trickle charged, slowly ramps up voltage, displays current function, charging voltage, etc.

You can read about the features on the link. Worth every penney of 50 bucks, but this may be cheaper if
searched for. It is Winkler Industrial Co. QuickCharger Model MC202-120050 in it's "generic" form.

TO ANSWER ALL THE QUESTION:

mah is miliamp/hours which means the higher the number, the longer the battery last

nimh batterry last much longer than nicad or alkaline battery in high drain device such as: digital camera, portable audio player, etc.. and environmental friendly. minh is almost memory free and that why they discharge much faster even when not in use to protect the battery.

nicad is no good for alsmost everything and not env. friendly, very toxic. however, for r/c car and plane, nicad is the choice since the energy flow (voltage) is much higher than nimh --> car/plane run faster but last very short time.

alkaline is a waste, only use them unless you really have to. use for emergency device only such as dectector because they retain their charge much longer than nicad and nimh. use alkaline rechargeable battery for these thing.

alkaline and nicad contain very toxic material and require special treatment before release to the envir., but i never seen anybody take time to dispose them properly, so please use rechargeable batteries.

i am waiting for lithium ion to come out, but its will be a long time since nobody embrace the technology because all the big bad company like duracell and energizer want to make money on alkaline, and try their best to keep people away from using these technology.

Just FYI for those who got in on this deal:

After getting the batteries and went searching for the best deal on a charger. I chose the new Rayovac 1-hour quickcharger which came with two more 1600mAh AA's. This charger can also be used in the car with a seperate $15 power adapter (my cellphone car charger just happens to match the power requirements of the Rayovac car kit).

The best price I found was at Wallyworld B&M for $29.95

(CompUsa - $40, BB - $35, St@ples - $60 w/ car charger)

Fantome, I think you would be better off getting the Maha C204f with 4x 1600 AAs for $33.97 from thomas-distributing.com, as Richard98 mentioned. I'm not sure about shipping costs, but for four extra dollars you get a couple extra batteries and the Maha 'Smart' charger. This chargers does quick or regular charging and I've heard good things about it. It also comes with the car adaptor that Rayovac wants you to pay extra for.

...Or why not but a 100W voltage inverter that can be founds in just about any automotive dept of most dept stores for less than $10 and then you can use any charger you like in your car. However, I can not figure out why anyone would need to charge barreris in their car.
