Who is going to give it a try?

I am sure that I will be, but I'm not sure if I'll use it regularly... It will depend entirely on how much of a performance change there is between my Windows setup.

The 300 selected beta testers are being notified today (at about 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time) that they’ll soon receive Steam hardware and SteamOS for testing.

This more or less gets me in a game. Not going to go through the sake of software configuration change, for the sake of software configuration change, to do something I have been able to do before just fine.

I won't be trying it out, simply because it doesn't offer me anything extra for the hassle of configuring it and finding out what works and what doesn't.

Steam runs just fine and all the games I currently play are Windows compatible.

If they baked in some functionality I was actually interested in (like say full HTPC capabilities *wink wink Volvo*), I'd be a lot more inclined to beta test their OS.

If you have a Nvidia card then performance will be about the same. May, be better, may be worst depending on title.

If you have an AMD card, stick to windows.

They've announced they are going to release SteamOS as episodic code chunks now. That way, they can deliver higher quality OS to the users at a faster pace. SteamOS episode one is expected soon.

Hmm, I see what they are trying to do with the kernel... (pretty much tweak it for games), but, I am wondering just how much that helps.
I suppose you could call it a 'console OS', with a very light desktop manager.

Yea, don't really see the point. Dx runs everything I want to play, and full functionality of windows apps.

Yeah, if SteamOS gets a netflix/hulu/amazon video streaming app this should make for a very nice HTPC OS. It shouldn't be difficult to get XBMC running on it, and with the in home streaming of steam titles from another machine, you could have something as small as a Roku that allows you to play all your games and watch movies/TV.

I don't think SteamOS is needed for streaming. Streaming options are already showing up in the Windows Steam client. I tried double logging into my account today on both my desktop and laptop. My desktop client got booted but then like magic my laptop client show streaming options. But they don't work yet. There's a thread about it in the Steam streaming group.

I was going to try it out on my old Gaming rig but the found out that it required UEFI to even install. So that ruled out that machine and don't really fell like trowing in another hdd to my new rig to try

It looks like I'm going to have to convert my PC into a HTPC since my gaming room will soon be turned into a nursery. I'm tossing around some different ideas for an input device such as a wireless keyboard with a built in mousepad for general internet use and possibly the new steam controller for actual gaming.

If the part where streaming games from a pc through the network actually works nicely I may just tuck my pc away somewhere and put a basic tower in the living room. But on the other hand, that is kind of stupid since the PC has to be somewhere with a monitor anyways so I might as well just throw the main rig next to the TV in the living room and keep windows 7 on i t.

I suppose if I ever find a way to get my office back I would appreciate the benefit of being able to game in both location via streaming from the pc which would give me reason to put steamos on a box in the living room.

Until that time, I feel that I will have no use for it. I think that it will be a pleasing addition once it comes down to it though.

That is what I see as the biggest issue as well, where games that are windows only will not work.

It should not be too hard, disconnect windows drive(drives), hook up a spare hdd for SteamOS, install SteamOS, hook up original drive(drives) and use the motherboard boot selection option to switch between the two
