Netflix won't supper any DRM free technology and since Linux doesn't have SliverLight (which supports DRM), they don't have an official app. Now, does that mean Valve won't try and coax Netflix into making an app for them.

It should be no different than Netflix on PS3.

Unless there have been advances recently in how they emulate SilverLight, I highly doubt the experience on Linux is close to the experience on Windows. Sorry, but no.
Open Firefox, go to Netflix and login, click on the movie you want to watch. How is that not the same as windows?

This. I've been watching Netflix on my ububtu htpc for quite some time.

This must be pretty recent because maybe a year ago that wasn't the case. Even a Google search comes up with recent (only a few months old) articles on how to spoof SilverLight authentication for Netflix use on Linux, because MoonLight doesn't have the DRM support. Perhaps Netflix has rolled out its HTML 5 support and that is working now, but I don't know as I've not used Linux at home in over a year.

Netflix on the PS3 uses SilverLight.

And if Sony/Netflix can get Silverlight working on the PS3, there is no reason Valve can't do it either.

I did not mean to say they can't do it, just that in order for them to get it, someone (Valve) is going to have to pony up some dough to MS (who owns SilverLight). And Gabe being Gabe, will probably mouth off and not do it.

I got to play with an official SteamBox today for about 10 minutes; the only software installed was TeamFortress 2.

I didn't mess with the OS much - I just used it to jump into a game.
So, the OS is probably the larger part of this thread, which I can't comment on.

But I can comment on the controller - wow. I want to just come out and say "it sucks", but that's not entirely fair since it obviously isn't tuned to run TF2.

But I will say that it was very tough to come to terms with - a large part of me was screaming out "why not just use joypads" instead of the touch sensitivity bit.
It almost felt like there was a trackball under the "pads".

The physical box wasn't much larger than an XBOX One -- but it was *hefty.*

For me it's now a matter of waiting for either
a) software to catch up to the controller
or
b) an alternate controller

Yeah, I'm just saying that if Sony thought it was important and got it working, even though Silverlight is made by their rival, and MS licensed it to them, Valve should be able to work something out. I would think MS would rather have people using Silverlight than a competing tech. If there was no alternatives than that would be a different story...

Valve is gonna need these media options to get people to try it, because the game library by itself wont be enough.

PS3 uses HTML5. Silverlight is dead and support ends 2021. As soon W3C finishes Encrypted Media Extensions and browsers start supporting them Netflix will probably ditch Silverlight, but how slow W3C is and Mozilla likely resisting HL3 might come out before that happens.

Wait.. min 500GB HDD? ... why? That sounds.. excessive? Wonder why they have it as a "req" when it certainly isn't close to that to install. Only have a 120GB SSD in my NES PC.

Because PC games are large. You can use your SSD if you want to.

Of course I can, it was somewhat of a tongue in cheek comment. I imagine those with HTPCs hooked up to their TVs aren't playing the latest and greatest PC games. I would like it's more frequently some of the older games. Certainly could be wrong, though.

Half Life 3 will be a Linux/SteamOS exclusive. You heard it here first.

Just kidding, I hope!

Not that that is impossible, but that would be really dumb of Valve.

Half-Life 3 free on SteamOS? They could probably afford to do that, and that would be smart.

if half life 3 was free...that means steamOS is free as well. you would be silly not tonjst try it on your regular computer.

if Valve can get magical performance gains like they say....it could be enough for someone to say something like, ill keep SteamOS on this hard drive and run windows seperately.

What people keep forgetting here is that the consumer has nothing to lose other than the installation of a free OS

wouldnt even need to be exclusive....charge $29 for windows version and $0 for steamos version

Dual boot is already pretty complicated for a lot of people. Plus, I don't think MS will give you windows for $29 on a competitor's machine.
