January 29, 2010 — Valve® today announced extraordinary 2009 growth data for Steam, a leading platform for PC games and digital entertainment, with major increases in accounts, concurrent players, unit sales and more. The year also marked tremendous adoption of the Steamworks suite of publishing services in the tangible and electronic versions of many of the year's biggest releases.

During the last calendar year the platform surpassed 25 million active accounts, up 25% from the prior year. Of the 25 million accounts, over 10 million of those have profiles in the Steam Community.

In addition to the millions of new accounts created during the year, the peak number of concurrent users eclipsed the 2.5 million mark during the month of December, pushing Steam's average monthly player minutes to more than 13 billion.

Meanwhile, Steam now offers over 1,000 games from over 100 developers and publishers around the world. Unit sales for 2009 increased by more than 205%, marking the fifth straight year the platform has realized over 100% year-over-year growth in unit sales.

2009 also delivered a wave of titles supported by Steamworks, in tangible and electronic versions, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Dawn of War II, and Empire: Total War. Empire also used Steamworks for the delivery and management of its paid downloadable content releases.

“Steam turned five years old in March 2009,” said Gabe Newell, president of Valve. “With the introduction of each new platform feature released over the years — such as the Steam Community, Steam Cloud, and Steamworks — we've seen corresponding growth in account numbers, concurrent player numbers and developer support for the platform. As such, we plan to continue to expand and grow the platform to better serve the developers supporting the open platform and millions of gamers logging in each day.”

Steam FTW!!

Anyone saying PC gaming is dying is crazy

Steam purchases in 2009 - $260 (majority from BF and XMAS sales)

Steam purchases in 2008 - $42 (and $30 of that was the Orange Box purchased at Amazon)

In about a decade when (good) broadband is more readily available (and cheaper) across this nation, we can expect most PC and Console games to be distributed online in a manner like Steam. The game developers love it because it eliminates the used game market. Consumers love it because it is so convenient (no DVD to deal with, no trip to the store). Win / Win!

I'm curious how much of their sales come from games that are on sale. To be fair, say anything greater than 25% (since the $5 off a $50 game deals aren't much of a bargain).

What I really like about Steam more so than not having to worry about cd's is that we get easy access to cool independent games that we wouldn't normally get to see since they don't get tons of exposure. Plus we get the awesome weekend deals every weekend and the New Years sale that makes us all file for bankruptcy.

What about that pay per bandwidth thing, time warner I think, has been doing? Or am I just way behind on my news?

I am refering to the cost of broadband going down.

Steam by itself seems to be equal to be a solid 4th place after the consoles.

Pc gaming is a lot more spread out in what's sold than consoles though. Big budget titles can't make it on the PC alone, but smaller titles seem to have a much better chance.

I love Steam. I dont buy boxed games anymore. Even if it is a little cheaper. Plus Steam always has sales.

Steam and Direct2Drive are the reasons I haven't bought a physical DVD game in two years and I don't see myself doing so anytime soon.

win/win ? what about the used game market you point out - that is how many people buy games, i see this as a lose since probably 75%+ of the games are still shit

When most of these games will be heavily discounted on Steam at some point (most within a year), why buy used?

What about the games you buy then do not play any more? You cannot sell them or your steam account.

Exactly. When Steam has the games for $5 to $10 during their weekend or holiday sales, I'll give up the ability to sell them.
