Everyone has their taste. I prefer a beer that I can't taste for an hour after I've finished drinking it. Guinness takes too much time to work up to. I've found that I have to be in a particular state to chew my beer, and as I haven't been drinking beer for all that long, I find myself preferring something simpler.

Whether or not it's "Europe's Bud Light", it tastes far better than any American beer I've ever had. I'm not a big fan of pale ales or marzens. I haven't had much opportunity to try beers from many other places.

There's a beer I had in Brazil once called Brahma that was pretty damn good, but I haven't been able to find it around here. Skol, from Turkey, was also popular there but not nearly as good.

Well even a Framboise has its place, generally as a dessert beverage. I haven't tried a belgian quad yet, a few Trippels that I liked, but my problem is my local beverage store has such a huge selection from Belgium and other places, and alot is so expensive, that I will resort to something else(aka domestic microbrews) because if I drop $10 for one 500ml bottle and hate it...well seems so wasteful.

That's the truth .. cost is the major pain with Belgians. I'm a big fan of geuzes/lambics and a good bottle of Cantillon Grand Cru can run $30 for a 750ml. You can generally find the basics like the three Chimay's for around $10/750ml. I usually keep some Lindemans Framboise in my fridge because, like you said, it's a fantastic desert beer. I'll bring it out with devil's food cake or something of the sort and it's a wonderful pairing.

I just recently had my first Geuze and soon after that Framboise I try to keep both around now. My bigger problem with cost is my wife suddenly discovered she liked these kinds of beer too and a 750ml bottle is gone in one dinner.

You don't always have to buy Belgian to find good belgian-influenced beers stateside.

Look for Ommegang Abbey Ale. I think they're out of New York. It's a really good representation of a Belgian, abbey-style ale. It can be found for around $8 per 750ml bottle.

Another decent one that isn't quite up to par, but is great for its price is the Abita Abbey Ale. 22 oz bottle for $4. It's a heck of a value. Don't let Abita's reputation (their other beers aren't good) scare you off. This is a good abbey-style ale for a great price.

Yuengling did it as well. They just decided to raise the price of a case at some point and bam.. people assumed it must be high quality since it was "more" expensive.

Dunno where you are at but I'm a couple hours from their brewery in PA and Yuengling prices haven't changed. Trust me, I've been drinking plenty of it over the years.

If I'm in the mood for drinking urine but my bladder's empty, I'll reach for a bottle of Stella. If I want something that actually tastes good and hasn't been falsely marketed (not that I have a problem with that as I have a marketing degree) I'll drink a New Glarus or Sam Adams.

I'm Belgian and Stella is just the normal every day beer that everyone here has in the fridge. It's actually not the market leader in Belgium, that is Jupiler, another pilsner from Inbev that is only brewed for the Belgian market. Stella is definetely not bad but Inbev marketing is genius. Take a normal ok pilsner that has been around forever and market it outside Belgium as a luxury beer.

fyi 24 x 25 cl bottles of Stella (that is 6l of beer) cost $10 in a Belgian supermarket.

Like I said, they are geniuses

Oh that's absolutely true. There are a multitude of non-Belgian Belgian style breweries out there. Hell, even Victory makes Golden Monkey which is a decent American micro Belgian style. Ommegang makes a few good ones, they actually make one of the few wits that I like. Their Three Philosophers is pretty good as well. If we're talking non-Belgian Belgian style brewers, though, I need to tip my hat to Unibroue - quite frankly they kick ass. Maudite, Don de Dieu, La Fin du Monde, Trois Pistoles etc.. etc.. are all pretty damned good - and fairly inexpensive.

I'm from a place about an hour away from Pottsville and yeah, I know, I grew up drinking lager (don't even need to call it Yuengling in PA). Still, though, that is what their marketing department did. They decide to simply inflate the price to give the appearance of increased quality .. and it actually improved sales. Now, Yuengling lager is considered a "good" beer in many other states (I've had bartenders in DC, Florida, etc. recommend it). I giggle on the inside when I hear bartenders talking it up. Definitely not terrible, it's a classic standby for me when I'm home, but it's nothing special either. And yeah, how great is it to be near Pottsville and get it absurdly cheap?
