They also opened something so the actual 3d models can be modded as well, in Maya. I'm not a graphics guy so not sure what that means, but sounds cool. I'm thinking, since Paradox obviously doesn't have the rights, they can't add Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5 or anything known as ship designs, but since modders don't make money out of it, they can (like the modders who made the Game of Thrones mod for CK2).

I'd bank on having star wars and star trek mods. Maybe even around release.

i want this game however i too was victim of paradox's endless DLC's in europa.

Although i do feel the money was well spent in the amount of time that i enjoyed the game, i felt some of the DLC's however should of been free.

I only find out later when EU was on sale, that they package all the DLC's with the game, so i think i will wait on it when that happens again.

They currently sell their CK2 and EU4 packages as "collections", despite the fact they dont even have like 1/4 to 1/2 of the DLC. And you definitely cant buy just the base game and content DLC, no you have to buy the package of base game and all types of DLC, which just happens to be $160. And thats $160 for only half the DLC keep in mind.

The thing is you don't need those DLCs. First, a lot of them are just cosmetic (unit clothes, flags, music, face packs). Then, the content DLCs are also optional, and usually (very frequently) go on sale, so a $15 DLC you can usually buy for $5 if you wait a few months. I have all the non-cosmetic DLCs except the last one for EU4 and I don't think I've spent more than $40 total for them. Considering I've played EU4 for over 750 hours, that's very cheap entertainment. Compare that to spending $50/$60 for some other game that I play for 30 or so hours, and it's a no-brainer.

Pre-ordered done, there's a promo code on GMG for a 25% off...IIRC it's SPACE25
30 bucks for the game it's quite a good price!

I think I am going to wait out this game until the first DLC plans comes out and take a look at the Paradox forums to see if there are any serious issues that are not being fixed.

I don't expect support problems from Paradox but their games are always a bit rough at launch.

Paradox games haven't been 'rough at launch' for a long time. They changed their approach to launching games several years ago. CK2 was solid at launch. EU4 was solid at launch. And Stellaris is already solid (I've been playing it for a week or so).

Based on this thread, I'm on the fence about this one. I'm jonesin' for a good space 4X game, but I might wait until this has been out a little while.

So solid that there are multiplayer problems already, UI scaling bugs, performance hitching with some AMD cpus, etc. Just a quick 2 minute check on the Paradox forums. It has only been <6 hours since release.

This is exactly what I was talking about. Rough at launch. It is good policy to always wait out the initial period of a game release and Paradox games are no different.

Had some time to sit down and play last night, but only for a couple hours.

It was enough to get a good feel for the game. So far I'm really liking it. It takes the best parts from Stars!, MOO, GalCiv, EU4 and mashes them together quite well. I can see myself dumping some serious hours into this game.

Got it yesterday, played for most of the day. Haven't had any issues so far, though I'm not playing multiplayer. The only problem I had was trying to sign in with my paradox forum account, apparently they changed some stuff, I just had to read on their forums a bit to get my old account merged into a new one.

The game looks good, and the strategy stuff seems well done so far. The biggest thing I don't like is the combat, maybe that will change when I get into a big war with another civ. So far I've just been expanding and fighting space monsters and stuff.

I might not be made for these kind of games but I just don't understand what i'm supposed to do except to survey, build stations, rinse and repeat.

The tutorial is not super helping and doesn't show you the basics, you have to open a menu or click something to have the robot tell you what it is, felt weird.

But I feel that if I can put efforts to learn it it will be rewarding so i'll try to keep at it.

Any tips for newbs in the genre? What are you supposed to do lol

4x games go like this:
Step 1: eXplore. You use your scouts to find out about your surroundings and see what areas are good for step 2.
Step 2: eXpand. Using the information from step 1, you start colonizing areas around you, you start meeting other species, peacefully at first.
Step 3: eXploit. With a big enough area from step 2, now you start exploiting the resources of those colonies in preparation for step 4.
Step 4: eXterminate. Use the resources from your planets to make armies/ships/weapons and start exterminating everything around you.

Bought the game. Put about 15 hours into it so I think I have enough time with the game to make a review.

Bottom Line Up Front: Typical paradox release. A technically complete game, it lacks the depth that will undoubtedly be brought about by DLC (as is their pattern). I'd give it a 7/10 right now. Anticipate 8.5 when all the DLC gets released.

Don't feel like writing a full review, so I'll just give three positives and three negatives

+Interface. Game looks great and handles the information on the screen nicely.
+Options for game creation. Whether this be designing your own race, how the galaxy size is and looks, etc. A nice touch is that you can designate a certain amount of races to have a "head start" which makes it more realistic (not like the entire galaxy discovers space travel on the same day). So you can bump into a huge empire right in the beginning.
+Technology. There is a lot of it, and I like the semi-random nature it is presented to you. You are given a choice of technologies to research per category (starts at 3, but can be more as the game progresses). You choose one to research. The ones you don't choose get shuffled back in, and you don't know when (or if) they will reappear. These aren't completely random, as certain tech is needed before future tech (you wont' get anti-matter drive, for instance, as an initial choice).

-The AI. It is pretty atrocious to be honest. In the beginning I didn't have much resources for fleets so I just had one sizeable one. While this fleet was on the edge of my empire, I got invaded by an enemy. I fought them and got wiped out. They continued with their fleet to Earth. I was trying to manufacture/scrap together a new fleet, but figured I was toast and was going to have to restart the game due to me miscalculating and not building up my defenses. Instead, the fleet just bombed earth for a few days then randomly just traveled in a big circle around my empire, not attacking anything. I eventually built up a fleet and destroyed theirs, then conquered their empire.

Another example, and this is something that happens every time, is allied fleets. Whenever you get into a war and have allies, the allies send their fleet to assist your fleet. This sounds all well and good until you realize they will send their fleets to assist yours WHEREVER YOURS IS. One of my allies got attacked by an enemy empire. My fleet was dealing with some minor aliens on the opposite side. I figured my ally could defend itself while I cleaned up the aliens so I could continue surveying that system, and then I'd move my fleet to help them. They sent the ENTIRETY of their fleet to "help" me mop up the alien ships and left their home worlds defenseless to the enemy advance (though not that it really mattered as, like I said before, the enemy attacking AI is pretty bad). This happens every time you get into a conflict. I am part of a federation now (A federation is the next step up from an alliance and needs at least 4 participants... I've named mine "The United Federation of Planets" ) with 6 races, and whenever we go to war I get like 10 fleets following my main fleet, wherever it is (chilling at my home world, repairing at a station, going off exploring...). Hugely annoying.

-Diplomacy. Well after writing the above I'm a little exhausted so I'll just say the diplomacy is pretty shallow. Not up to what I'm used to with CK2 or EU4, though I expect this to get expanded with DLC.

-Combat. Combat is pretty bland and uninvolved, though I'm not sure how they could improve it with the model they have.

Final Thoughts/Recommendation: Good enough to scratch that space empire itch, but I'd wait until at least a few DLC's are released.

*I will note that I've experienced zero bug related issues (slow downs/crashes/glitches/etc.), so for me it is really polished in that regard.

Wonderful post! Thank you so much!

The two biggest things I usually care about in a grand strategy game (after finding out whether it runs in the first place), is diplomacy and AI. And it's disappointing to me to see how many strategy fans and gamers don't seem to notice or care just how deep diplomacy is, or how challenging the AI is.

Hearing that both of those things are pretty weak at this point makes me think I'll be holding off for awhile. Hopefully it will be patched with some DLC by the time it goes on sale on STEAM.

But it's good to hear its got potential and is not a complete mess right off the bat.

You're welcome. Glad it was of some help. I am confident the diplomacy will be expanded at some point through DLC. AI is perhaps a bit harder to fix but I think that is fixable as well through normal patching. Just need to assign better combat priorities.

It seems that the campaign AI (empire building/management) is decent. So it's just the managing of fleets that needs to be worked.

If you just watch the first two or so episodes of this guy's "Let's Play", you'll understand most of what you'll need to play this game. He covers most of the mechanics in the first couple of episodes.

So in other words, this is basically just like a Warlock: Master of the Arcane, but in space?
