stereo install in a bus

The stereo goes in a panel that includes the microphone for PA access and a big dial for volume control, but I'm fine without that if necessary. I know how to wire the stereo power but the speakers have me confused. I actually took them apart and did some continuity testing, etc, and diagrammed it all out. The stereo has four channels (FR FL BR BL) but I'd be ok if I had to wire the speakers in mono. I'm really not sure how to do it, though. I think I already blew one stereo by getting it wrong so I'd love some help...

To check the polarity of a speaker just hook up a battery with the polarity marked a 9v or so (I used to use my cordless drill battery) to it and if it moves out then the positive lead is on the positive side if not then its reversed. Unless your head unit supports 2ohm loads (I doubt) you will need to wire them in series http://www.termpro.com/asp/pubs.asp?ID=124 and not in parallel like you have.

Would he be better off just running two channels?

2 speakers in parallel, two pairs of parallel speakers in series? That would give you nominal 4 ohm loads. I doubt the speakers are terribly power hungry so that might be a workable solution.
