So you are saying fathers who are police, miners, firefighters, soldiers and other dangerous day to day jobs should just stop that line of work and leave it up to someone who is single?

Stop trying to come off like some hero who knows how everyone should raise their kids. His millions donated to help animals is something for that family to be just as proud of as a firefighter saving a life and dying in a burning building.

There are looong waiting lists to be a firefighter too, so don't say there has to be someone there to do the job, they chose it.

I love how people Say "it was bound to happen, spare me the drama" blah blah blah. Well next time think about it when you mourn your soldiers who die at the battle field in iraq.

The soldiers know what to expect, it's a war. This is not different. It's their choice to go out and fight in Iraq. It was Steve Irwin's choice to do what he does on his tv show. Drama isn't involved in either case.

Exactly... serving in the military or police force is a bit different than putting yourself in dangerous situations for TV entertainment.

Regardless, he will be missed

its ironic everyone finds this 'surprising' because we all see him as some sort of super human immune to death

Yeah. He did some really crazy stuff. Which is also why I respected him more than any other in his class. He was also a really cool and friendly guy. Just like a fire man or police officer though comes a high risk for a fatality. I guess it was only a matter of time.

I'm sad to see him go and I feel devastated for his young daughter. I could only imagine to see her grow up without him with only videos of what he use to do. At least she could be proud.

Agreed. He died doing what he devoted his life to - being with wildlife in order to help protect it.

This is just a freak accident. I wonder if he even saw the sting ray since it was buried in the sand. He handled crocidiles, alligators, extremely venomous snakes, large constrictors, and none of them did him in. One skittish ray with good aim happened to do it. A stab in the heart with a venomous spine.....that just sucks. Not a snake bite on a limb or something, but just right there at the worst possible place.

A hell of a legacy though. He ran his parents' zoo, and brought it great publicity. His love for animals was incredible too, even for those capable of killing him easily.

Well said. People choose to do dangerous jobs, and can be proud to say that they do it. Voluntarily putting your life on the line every day you go to work can earn you some amount of respect.

More about sting rays:
From here:
"Surf Lifesavers national marine stinger adviser Lisa-Ann Gershwin said there had only been 17 fatal stingray attacks worldwide. 'I think it's just an extraordinary freak accident that has happened to his heart,' she said.

'A lot of people will be afraid by this, but they need to keep in mind that this was a freak accident, it was a terrible tragedy but it is not common.'

Dr Gershwin said stingray stings to the legs or arms were common and, while painful, were not normally considered dangerous."

And from here:
"Stingray attacks are extremely rare. There have only been two similar deaths reported in Australia."

I'd wager that sting rays are less dangerous than bees and wasps. A friend of mine back in high school lost his dad to a hornet nest. His dad had an allergic reaction and died within a few minutes. So is everyone who mows their lawn a wreckless idiot because they might encounter these deadly insects who kill more people than sting rays?

This sucks!

I, for some reason, always though of Steve Irwin as invincible. He was always fearless no matter what animal, so it is so hard to believe that this happened.

He will be missed!

Steve Irwin may have taunted happy fun ball more than anyone else but that doesn't make his death any less tragic. So give up the senseless flaming, people, and show some respect.

This is hilarious. Let's pretend he wasn't famous and that you were all reading this article. "Man leaves family, 3 year old fatherless after sticking his thumb up a stingray's arse."

You'd all be lauging and calling for a darwin award. He's a selfish prick for continuing his antics with a family to provide for.

He gambled. He lost. There's way bigger tragedies going on a daily basis.

Amen! Nobody here "knew" this guy, yet every response is like they lost a good friend. This guy got exactly what was coming to him.

The reason people are sad is because this guy touched their lives in some small way, even if it was just giving them a few laughs or getting them to see snakes or alligators in a different way. Also, he seemed like an uncomplicated, good guy in a world of so many corrupt, shady characters, it was refreshing to see this guy who had such a child-like enthusiasm and sense of wonder and excitement for animals the loved.

So on the money Can I have a Halluhah Brother

wtf.. You're looking into it waaay to much. World full of corrupt, shady characters? lol.. The only reason people will "miss" him is because they will miss him doing crazy, [stupid], outrageous things. Not because he "touched their lives"....

I'm sure his family is well provided for, considering his celebrity.

u know I agree with iwearnosox. teh kid has no father now. its more than just money.
if u had a kid who like to play around with deadly animals to entertain people, wouldn't u want him to stop for the sake of his family? would the kid be selfish if he continues?

He was doing more then entertainment. He and his wife had an affection for the animal kingdom.
