This has saddened a lot of people at my work. He wasn't always the most popular with people in the animal care field, because of his sensationalist way of doing things....but he really did create a lot of interest in people who otherwise wouldn't have cared about the not-so-fuzzy animals.

Several news crews came to our aquarium this AM to do interviews with what people and staff thought, and take some shots of our rays in our touch pool (yes, we clip the barbs)....

He really did some ridiculous stuff with very dangerous animals and situations....I think something tragic was bound to happen eventually. I was shocked to hear that it was a ray. Usually they'll just scamper off to safety if they feel threatened, but if they're cornered...or whatever, they'll strike. Just a total freak occurance, and there aren't great details on exactly where the ray was, whether it was cornered or aggravated or any of that.

It is sad nonetheless.

I don't think they'll show the clip of him dieing... since he was doing it while filming I think.

MORAL OF THE STORY IS DONT MESS WITH THINGS THAT CAN KILL YOU......

im sorry but what a jackhole

Stingrays. Aren't. Deadly. Animals. It was a fluke.

A few other people have died. Apparently almost no one can survive a jab to the chest from the barb.

Wow, this is just terrible news. I loved his work both on the set and in the real world. The loss of such a vocal environmentalist is painful. Condolences to his family and his organization.

This is REALLY depressing... I freaking loved Irwins energy and positive attitude, once again a million douche bags on TV that do nothing but create problems, give bad karma, have nothing positive to stay are still kicking away, but somebody like this has to go...

what a waste...

Wow. I can't believe this actually happened. I'm surfing the youtube videos and I see a tribute to the crocodile hunter movie. I'm thinking what's going on here. Then I go to the wiki link and I find out he died today. I still can't believe it. I think he will be immortalized in everyone's mind who has ever seen him.

I hope you are saying that these other people that are still alive are a "waste", since the rest of your post did not indicate that you were referring to Steve.

As for me, I am deeply saddened by this terrible turn of events. It's all very shocking and unbelievable. It makes no sense for a man like Steve to be taken away from his family, but then again, we can never truly understand what God's plans are for all of us.

The world has seen a terrible loss, but in his lifetime, Steve has performed some of the greatest progress in his fields, and for that, the world should be eternally grateful.

Rest in peace.

I don't know, I read that quote and from what I got JlmmyK thought Steve Irwin was a good guy.

Heard the news last night when it broke and it broke my heart. Everybody could see that the Crocodial Huntah was a good man and cared about animals. Not only did we lose one of the people who actually cared about crocodiles but somebody that cared about all animals and made TV entertaining and interesting to watch with his unique and loving personality.

RIP Steve Irwin, we all miss you.

RIP Steve

I feel bad for his family. His son is only 3 and will only barely remember him. Except for the hours and hours of footage. He really seemed like a passionate and loving father. Big loss.

Anyways, although Im not one to take another mans death as humourous, I cannot make myself feel sorry for someone who continuously put himself in harms way and dies in the process. If someone goes freefalling hundreds of times and then his chute doesnt open, hes a dumbfuck. If you go running with the bulls in pamplona and get trampled, youre a moron, good riddance.

Steve did a lot of good things, but when you have a family there are more important things in life than seeing how close you can get to a pissed off Rhino or if you can make a Lion eat meat out of your hands. So he paid the price and now his children will grow up without a father. Feel sorry for his children, at the least you should be looking at Steve as a fool that took one too many risks, no matter how benign it seemed.

While, the general concensus is yes. He took the risks, but you know what? I don't think any of his family is going to hold it against him. His wife loved him enough to knowingly marry him and then partner up with him on his croc hunting. It's not like he was the only one aware that his life was in peril to educate people and he did it in a manner that entertained people.
